Position: Principal Land Consultant
The WSP Land team is seeking an experienced Land Consultant to lead delivery of major infrastructure projects across the UK and Ireland. The role involves land referencing, land acquisition, land access, statutory consents and stakeholder engagement to support projects in energy, highways, rail, water, local government and aviation.
Key Responsibilities
Ensure successful delivery of projects – securely, on time, within budget and to high standards.
Act as a trusted advisor to clients, internally and externally, managing relationships.
Advise on land issues across the UK and Ireland, including statutory processes (e.g., DCOs, DNOs, Scottish Bills, TWA, T&CPA, CPOs, motor‑way orders).
Secure land rights for high‑profile infrastructure projects.
Liaise with landowners, land agents, legal representatives, planning authorities, key stakeholders, contractors and clients.
Collaborate with engineering, environmental and planning teams, both within WSP and in project supply chains.
Conduct quality assurance of deliverables related to land interests, survey access, consents and acquisition.
Share knowledge and lessons across regions and projects.
Lead, motivate and develop staff; contribute to business strategy.
Assist in writing bids/tenders to secure opportunities.
Deliver training on technical topics through the CPD‑accredited Land Academy.
Travel across the UK and Ireland; occasional visits to WSP’s Global Capability Centre in India.
Required Qualifications & Experience
Expertise in urban and/or rural environments, property, communities and stakeholders.
Experience working on infrastructure development schemes with multidisciplinary teams.
Experience negotiating commercial terms with landowners and knowledge of the legal process for wayleaves and easements.
Demonstrated ability to reduce land risk and advise on land‑related matters throughout a project lifecycle.
Track record of developing Orders, consents and land interests and knowledge of relevant legislation.
Strong communication, influencing and negotiating skills.
Capacity to work independently and under pressure to deliver high‑quality outputs.
Strong landowner and public engagement skills.
Proficiency in business and IT tools.
Good document management and quality assurance skills.
Degree in Geography, Land/Estate Management, Agriculture or a related field.
Chartered status or membership of a relevant professional body is advantageous.
Valid UK driving licence and willingness to travel to sites and locations.
