Job Description for Caretaker/ Handy person for Waverley Community Council
Reporting to: Clerk to the Council
Location: Waverley Community Hub,and Waverley
Hours: 20 hours, may include weekend working with a possibility of extra hours.
Pay: £12.60 an hour as of April 2025, on a flexi hours basis to be agreed with the Clerk
* The council will make appropriate provision for the payment of a pension in accordance with the Automatic Enrolment Pension Scheme.
* Annual leave is 22 days pro rata according to working hours excluding statutory Holidays.
* Sick pay will be paid according to your contract.
* The post is permanent with a probation period
Overall responsibilities: The main responsibilities will include opening and closing the community centre, preparing rooms for hire, minor repairs and maintenance work, including woodwork basic plumbing, painting and general cleaning (high cleaning). The position will include occasional late closing and working at weekend functions. Outdoor work in Waverley, will include asset inspection and maintenance. It is expected you will be courteous and friendly to members of the public as the 'face' of the Waverley Community Council and take a flexible approach to meet the Council's requirements.
Main Duties
· Opening and closing the community centre for people hiring it. Preparing the layout for rooms booked. Deal with contractors and deliveries, as and when necessary. To conduct fire alarm checks in the community centre
· You will be expected to provide cover for the cleaner as well
· Able to use ladders and work at heights.
Repairs and Maintenance
· To undertake repairs and maintenance as and where required across the parish of Waverley
· Minor repairs at the community centre
· Ensure the safety and maintenance of materials, machinery, tools and safety equipment owned by the WCC.
· Collection of materials or equipment from local suppliers when required, for which expenses are paid.
Health and Safety
· To undertake routine health, safety and fire inspection visual checks as part of everyday work, recording and instigating remedial action where necessary within the community centre.
· Carry out visual check on the defibrillators and community garden on a regular basis and record the inspection as part of the risk assessment process.
· Attend training deemed relevant to the position.
Working with the Clerk
· You will be expected to liaise with the Clerk on routine maintenance
· To be available at short notice to carry out emergency repairs or make safe damaged property when required.
· Attend and assist the council at events, such as the annual Funday, Christmas Light-switch on and adding tree dressing amongst other things
· You will be expected to undertake training as and when requested.
· As a term of your employment, you can be required to undertake such other duties commensurate with your grade/hours of work, as may reasonably be required of you at your initial place of work or at other of the Council's property at the request of the Clerk.
· The post is ideally suited to someone living locally who is reliable
