Head of Commercial – Balfour Beatty, Converter Station Build (Maxim Park / Isle of Lewis)
About the Role
As the senior commercial lead, you will provide commercial leadership, control and assurance across the pre‑construction and initial works phase, ensuring the project is positioned for successful transition into main construction.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead commercial strategy and governance for the Initial Works phase, ensuring robust commercial controls, reporting and decision support.
* Manage contract administration and commercial performance, including change management, early warnings, compensation events/variations, and entitlement management.
* Support the Ofgem project assessment process by coordinating inputs, evidence and commercial narrative to demonstrate project readiness and value for money.
* Prepare the commercial route to Main Construction Contract: shaping strategy, procurement/commercial plans, risk allowances, and transition readiness toward summer 2027.
* Navigate complex stakeholder interfaces, building strong working relationships across client, supply chain and internal teams.
* Provide commercial leadership on island logistics challenges including considerations around accommodation, marine vessel hire, access constraints and remote delivery planning.
* Mentor and develop commercial colleagues, setting standards and improving consistency of approach across the package.
Essential Qualifications
* Significant senior commercial experience on major infrastructure / energy / civils projects (ideally £100m+ environments).
* Proven ability to lead commercial strategy through early phase contracts (ECI/Initial Works/pre‑construction) and transition into main works.
* Strong experience managing complex stakeholder landscapes and influencing outcomes at senior levels.
* Confidence working in challenging delivery contexts (remote locations, constrained logistics, multiple interfaces).
* Solid understanding of regulatory / assurance environments and the ability to support Ofgem-facing assessment activity.
Desirable Qualifications
* Experience working in island/remote delivery settings and/or managing commercial risk relating to marine logistics and accommodation.
* Strong contract knowledge (e.g., NEC/JCT) and ability to lead change control and commercial negotiation.
