Company Description
The apprenticeship journey starts with a Level 2 in Engineering Operations. This is a general engineering apprenticeship covering Electrical, Technical Design, Fabrication, Welding, Mechanical Engineering. On average, this takes 18 months to 2 years to complete. If you have already completed a Level 2 in Engineering Operations or an equivalent qualification, you will not have to repeat this.
Once you have completed the Level 2, you can progress to a Level 3 in this specific trade area. The duration of each apprenticeship depends on your ability, the specific apprenticeship, and the location. A Level 3 Trade-specific apprenticeship typically takes 2 to 2.5 years.
Your time will be split between study with your training provider and practical experience in the yard. We have dedicated college partners at each yard to support your skill development throughout your apprenticeship. Start dates are expected around August/September 2025.
Job Description
Reporting to: The Apprenticeship Manager and Apprenticeship Supervisor
Job purpose: To work with metals to create high-strength welds in two welding positions, using at least one arc welding process, to support production at Navantia UK.

Progression: Pathways for General Welders include advancement to Multi-Positional Welder, High Integrity Welder, Welding Instructor, Welding Inspector, or Supervisory roles.
Job Duties:
* Learn to produce quality welds using various welding processes (TIG, MMA, MIG/MAG, FCAW) and materials (Carbon Steel, Low Alloy Steel, High Alloy Steel, Stainless Steel, Nickel Alloys, Aluminium) in different positions (Downhand, Horizontal, Vertical, Overhead)
* Obtain qualifications per standards such as ISO 9606, ASME IX, BS4872, AWS D1.1
* Meet international standards for inspection (Visual, Magnetic Particle, Dye Penetrant)
* Learn proper procedures for equipment setup, handling consumables, and preparing materials
* Complete and inspect finished welds for quality and compliance
* Adhere to health and safety requirements at all times

* Minimum GCSE grade C/4 or equivalent in Mathematics and English
* Strong communication skills, initiative, and motivation
