Job overview

Exciting opportunity for an existing STH qualified nurse to become a Nurse Practitioner covering maternity leave in cataract services.

The post holder will build on knowledge already gained in the ophthalmic setting, using their expertise to assess, plan implement and evaluate post operative care and treatment, in the clinic department of the Northern General Eye Centre.

Main duties of the job

The Nurse Practitioner role includes responsibility for patient assessment and reviewing them post operatively following cataract surgery. The post holder will use their ophthalmic skills and experience i.e. use of the slit lamp, interpreting imaging reports whilst leading in the post operative triage/face to face clinical outpatient and day case clinic/sessions.

The post holder will build on existing knowledge and experience with minimal supervision being an autonomous independent practitioner, undertaking assessments related to the care needs of patients, plan programmes of care, implement and an evaluation of these programmes.

The Nurse Practitioner will, and always work in a manner that promotes professionalism, dignity and human rights through the adoption of person centred care principles. He/she is expected to supervise junior staff and to teach qualified and unqualified staff, supporting development, progression and implementation of ophthalmic developments.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for a period of a maximum of twelve months due to maternity leave of the substantive post holder. The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts and statutory maternity provisions.

Please note all existing NHS staff will only be considered on a secondment basis. This must first be agreed with your current line manager.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Registered nurse (valid with NMC)
2. To have completed the national practice assessor training or equivalent teaching and assessing qualification for those with ENB998
3. First level degree or working towards.
4. Completion/working towards post graduate education relevant to the role ie: Ophthalmic course, non-medical prescribing qualification

Desirable criteria

5. Evidence of working towards a Master’s degree

Experience

Essential criteria

6. Significant ophthalmic experience at AFC band 5 (or equivalent).
7. Evidence leadership qualities.
8. Relevant experience of caring for Cataract patients
9. Ability to work within the Ophthalmology Multi-Disciplinary team.
10. Experience of assessing patients’ needs as an autonomous practitioner
11. Trained in intravenous Cannulation and IV medication competency
12. Leadership experience within a clinical setting including quality assurance

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria

13. Competence achieved for slit lamp skills and examinations.
14. Biometry and OCT scan interpretation.
15. Assess, identify post operative complications and recommend treatment
16. Evidence of commitment to professional development, education & training ie: Leadership qualification, Short courses in Specialism, advanced communication skills/ counselling

17. Effective communicator with excellent leadership skills
18. Ability to participate in education of others
19. Ability to work flexibly to meet needs of the service
