What is the job role?
2 x Full Time, 12-month Fixed Term positions available.
Coventry City Council’s Adult Education Service is committed to delivering high-quality, inclusive learning opportunities that improve lives and strengthen communities. This is an opportunity for passionate and adaptable candidates to join the enthusiastic, committed and experienced Coventry Adult Education Service ESOL team. We deliver high quality, English Language Acquisition programmes to men and women from a range of cultural backgrounds across Coventry. These posts are to support on our new First Steps ESOL project which focuses on engaging and supporting residents who have beginner/pre-Entry - Entry 1 level English language skills to start their language learning journey.
In this role you’ll help deliver courses focused on English language aligned to the Home Office Indicators of Integration Framework such as housing, work, education, health & social care and leisure as well as assisting learners to access support from organisations across Coventry. You’ll assist with planning sessions, preparing materials, and guiding learners through their educational journey. There will also be a strong focus on taking learning outside the classroom through enrichment activities, taking learners on visits and supporting them to learn language in context.
Delivery will take place in community venues such as Family Hubs, libraries, schools, VCS organisations and outreach locations. You’ll aid with recruitment of learners and signposting them to appropriate support in the city for different aspects of their lives. Outreach and wrap around support will involve visiting local partner organisations and supporting learners in real life situations. Travel between sites is standard. The project will run year-round and in the school holidays. This is not a term time only role/position.
All candidates must have the Right to Work in the UK. We are currently not offering sponsorship for this role.
This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
Who are we looking for?
You will have experience of working with English for Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) learners through providing in class support in adult learning environments in community settings. Working under the direction of a tutor, you will work with small groups to enable learners to fully access learning. You will have strong communication and organisational skills and the capability to build links with organisations who support ESOL learners in Coventry. In addition, you will have the ability to engage diverse ESOL learners including individuals with diagnosed or suspected additional learning needs and a commitment to inclusive education. Due to the level of the project, experience of supporting pre-literate ESOL learners and those with very low-level English would be highly beneficial.
