Epsrc summer research internship

Nottingham (Nottinghamshire)
Internship
Posted: 5 June
Offer description

Description Help us to unlock the secrets of hydrogen degradation! Are you ready to dive into the world of advanced materials and make real scientific impact this summer? This summer research internship offers an exciting opportunity for a curious, motivated, and hands-on students to join our research team investigating hydrogen degradation. Hydrogen can have a key role to play as an energy carrier that could support the Net Zero transition. It could also help enable the decarbonisation of ‘difficult to decarbonise’ sectors, like aviation, steel, and cement making, where direct electrification routes are either impractical or do not exist. However, both hydrogen storage and transmission are limited by our understanding of current materials, which can be degraded or embrittled by hydrogen at ambient temperature. While hydrogen-induced failure is well documented, the underpinning mechanisms are not comprehensively understood for many materials, new and conventional, thus there is an opportunity to develop methods that can appraise these phenomena in real time under ambient conditions. This project aims to assess the viability of real time appraisal of hydrogen-induced damage under an elastic tensile load using spatially resolved acoustic spectroscopy and optical microscopy. The project will be centred on the design and creation of a test rig that can apply a tensile load and an electrochemical load to cathodically charged sheet metal test samples.
