Locum Consultant General and Upper GI Surgery (Benign)

This post is for a Locum Consultant in General and Upper GI Surgery. It is a whole‑time (10 PA) six‑month fixed‑term contract offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated medical professional to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
Applicants must hold Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (UK or equivalent) and be fully registered with the General Medical Council at the time of application.
Due to the short‑term nature of the role and service demand, the successful candidate must hold full registration with the GMC and have an existing right to live and work in the UK at the time of application. Candidates who are not GMC registered or do not hold an existing right to live and work in the UK at the time of application will not progress through the short‑listing stage.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work within a busy general surgical department, participating in a general surgical on‑call rota currently at 1 in 9 and including prospective cover. The department runs a 24‑hour on‑call for consultants, during which elective activity is cancelled.
The post holder will provide elective general and advanced benign upper‑GI services and help develop new services, including advanced laparoscopic procedures such as hiatus hernia repair, laparoscopic anti‑reflux procedures, and laparoscopic hernia repairs. Provision will be made to develop special interest in advanced laparoscopic procedures, and the department has plans for expansion including laparoscopic bile duct exploration. The post holder is expected to contribute to this objective.
They will assist in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults in line with the Trust’s commitment.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Full registration with the GMC at the time of application.
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* FRCS or equivalent medical qualification.
* MRCP or equivalent medical qualification.
* MD/PHD or equivalent medical qualification.
Knowledge & Experience
* Evidence of academic publications.
* Evidence of appropriate teaching experience.
* Audit experience.
Skills
* Evidence of laparoscopic surgery experience.
* Evidence of subspecialty upper‑GI experience.
* Leadership skills.
Other
* Research experience.
* Understanding of principles of the NHS.

Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 per annum (Grade YM 73).
