Role Purpose
You will provide strong financial support to the business owner and leadership team. Your role is to ensure financial discipline, translate numbers into insight, manage the day-to-day financial operations, and give the founder confidence about where the business is heading. You'll own the numbers, controls, forecasts and processes - while leaving strategic decisions to the founder.
In short: You are the "go-to" finance person in the business, helping it scale with clarity and control.
Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Reporting & Management Accounts
* Prepare monthly management accounts, including Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow, and KPI dashboards
* Drive the month-end close process (journal entries, accruals, prepayments, reconciliations)
* Analyze variances vs budget/forecast and present explanations, trends, risks to the founder
* Assist in producing board/management packs or internal financial summaries
Budgeting & Forecasting
* Lead the annual budgeting process in coordination with department heads
* Maintain rolling forecasts (e.g. 12–24 month outlook), updating assumptions as circumstances change
* Model scenario analyses (e.g. growth, cost levers, upside/downside) to help guide decisions
Cash & Working Capital Control
* Monitor and manage cash flow, working capital, and liquidity
* Maintain a 12–24 month cash forecast and alert the founder to potential cash pressure early
* Oversee debtor (credit control) and creditor processes, ensure timely collections and payments
* Ensure supplier payments, reconciliation of bank accounts
Controls, Systems & Processes
* Define, implement and maintain financial controls, policies and procedures to mitigate financial risk
* Improve and streamline finance processes and automation (e.g. in accounting systems, reporting tools, integrations)
* Ensure regular reconciliations and balance sheet integrity
Stakeholder & External Interface
* Liaise with external accountants, auditors, tax advisors, banks as required
* Support external audit or year-end statutory accounts (preparing schedules, liaising with external auditors)
* Ensure compliance with UK accounting standards, tax, VAT, regulatory requirements
Business Partnering & Advisory
* Act as a sounding board to the founder: answering financial queries, participating in strategic planning
* Provide insights & financial input to business initiatives (e.g. new services, investments, pricing decisions)
* Work with non-finance staff to help them understand financial impacts of their decisions
Ad Hoc Projects
* Ownership of special financial projects (e.g. system upgrades, cost reviews, profitability analysis of clients or services)
* Lead or support process improvement initiatives
Person Specification / Skills & ExperienceEssential
* Qualified accountant (ACA / ACCA / CIMA or equivalent) or strong experience in financial control/management roles
* Proven track record (e.g. 3–5+ years) in finance roles covering management accounts, forecasting, controls
* Strong technical accounting skills: journals, accruals, reconciliations, balance sheet, cash flow
* Experience building and maintaining forecasts, modelling scenarios
* Excellent Excel skills (advanced formulas, pivot tables, sensitivity analysis)
* Experience with accounting software (Xero, Sage, QuickBooks, or similar) and financial reporting tools
* Strong commercial mindset - ability to see "the business behind the numbers"
* Good communication skills: able to translate financials to non-finance stakeholders
* Self-starter, proactive, detail-oriented, reliable, with ability to manage time, prioritize and meet deadlines
Desirable
* Previous experience supporting founders / small to medium businesses / agencies
* Familiarity with agency metrics (e.g. utilization, margin per project, retainer models)
* Experience of automation, process improvement, or integrating finance + operations systems
* Exposure to external audit and statutory accounts
* Experience in credit control and collections
Working Environment & Expectations
* You will have regular weekly check-in meetings with the founder (e.g. 1 hour)
* You will be available for occasional ad hoc queries or reviews (within reason)
* Some flexibility in how the 18 hours are split, but expect concentrated hours around month end or forecasting cycles
* Remote / hybrid work possible, but periodic in-office presence may help with integration and team communication
* You will be treated as a senior member of the team, with access to business performance data and transparency
