Job Title: Battery Application Engineer Position Type: Permanent Location: Kidlington, Oxford or Central London Location available Onsite Policy: Hybrid, 3 days on / 2 days off working Department: Elysia Cell Modelling Role Purpose: In this role you will be deploying, optimising and parameterising Li-ion battery models based on both lab and real-world data, empowering Elysia’s customers to extend the lifetime of their assets, improve their safety and maximise performance throughout life. Working directly on customer projects, you will ensure Elysia’s models and diagnostics provide actionable insights in a variety of use cases, powering batteries of different chemistries and characteristics in applications as diverse as personal EVs, motorsport, mining trucks and stationary energy storage. You will be a problem solver, keen to take on the next battery parameterisation challenge. You will actively contribute to Elysia’s product and tool development by identifying weaknesses and proposing improvements. Job Responsibilities: Working within a world-class team, you will focus on the application of Li-ion battery models and diagnostics to maximise performance, lifetime and safety. At every step you will be supported and empowered to make an impact; we are looking for someone excited to bring new ideas to the table and drive the implementation of these ideas through to completion. What you’ll do: Parameterise electrothermal Li-ion battery models, including novel model structures, and apply them to customer projects. Optimise models and diagnostics to customer and/or lab data and document and communicate the learnings to improve the upstream processes. Commission lab tests needed for customer project delivery, and work with the testing team to optimise test procedures, set-up and improve efficiency. Be a problem solver, actively contributing to improving Elysia’s products through identifying and addressing issues. Understand the context in which batteries are used in the real world (e.g. under large thermal gradients, with non-ideal sensor placement) and the impacts on model error. Develop and implement strategies to mitigate these issues. Support the development of battery characterisation test procedures optimised to best capture performance and degradation. Work with Cloud and Embedded teams to develop and implement diagnostics and prognostics across Elysia’s product portfolio. Experience & Qualifications: Our team values a growth mindset over an expansive CV, we encourage you to apply if you have some or all of the following: Masters or PhD in a relevant field (Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Control Science or similar) or equivalent experience 3 years academic or industrial experience in mathematical modelling Experience in battery modelling Understanding of key degradation processes relevant to batteries Strong communication and teamwork skills Ability to think broadly and adopt and/or adapt technology or understanding from other fields to create future business opportunities and communicate their potential to peers. Beneficial: Experience in battery testing Experience using PyBaMM Experience using MATLAB/Simulink Experience using Git This job description is not exhaustive, and the job holder will be required to carry out from time-to-time tasks in addition to the above that will be both reasonable and within their capabilities. Diversity & Inclusion: We are an equal opportunities employer. You do not need to match every listed expectation to apply for this position. At Elysia we are committed to building a team that encompasses a variety of backgrounds, experiences and skills, and encourage the diversity of thought that comes from all walks of life.
