About the role
The post holder will provide clear clinical leadership to Staff Nurses and Nursing Assistants working on the ward, assisting the Unit Manager in developing and maintaining a service committed to the provision of care for Low Secure Mental Health individuals. The post holder will actively participate in the day‑to‑day running of the unit and the organisation and development of staff within their sphere of responsibility, leading a number of service users and ensuring high standards of individualised care based on best practice, co‑produced with service users, their families and carers. The post holder will play a key role in ensuring that quality care is provided reflecting Royal College of Psychiatry Low Secure Unit Standards and the Care Quality Commission Standard. As a charge nurse you will demonstrate leadership in many clinical situations, contributing to quality of care and working collaboratively with patients to provide a least‑restrictive but safe environment.
Key Responsibilities
* With the referral team and Responsible Clinician, undertake assessment of patients referred for Low Secure Rehabilitation and provide feedback as required.
* In the absence of the Unit Manager, provide out‑of‑hours leadership for Prospect Place.
* Undertake comprehensive, patient‑focused nursing assessment and co‑produce care plans in consultation with the service user and their families and carers.
* Undertake comprehensive risk assessment and formulate risk management plans with Service Users, their families and carers.
* Assist the Unit Manager in developing a service that ensures the needs of patients are met with regard to age, spiritual, cultural, ethnic and sexual orientation.
* Assist the Unit Manager with the ongoing development of the unit.
* Assist the Unit Manager in developing protocols and procedures that reflect the needs of patients within the unit.
* In the absence of the manager, undertake responsibility for the day‑to‑day running of the unit.
* In consultation with the multi‑disciplinary team, ensure high standards of individual care for patients and that they are fully consulted and involved in every aspect of their care.
* Provide management and clinical supervision to members of staff.
* Conduct annual appraisals/IPDRs for staff members.
* Liaise effectively with all members of the multi‑disciplinary team and both statutory and non‑statutory organisations involved with client care.
* Participate in the monitoring and implementation of the Mental Health Act (1983).
* Follow the NMC's "The Code: Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviour for Nurses and Midwives".
* Stay aware of current research in the care of people with severe mental illness.
* Assist the Unit Manager in ensuring high quality evidence‑based practice is carried out by all staff within the unit.
* Maintain up‑to‑date records for all service users referred to the unit.
* Participate in the recruitment process as required.
