Specialty Doctor in Ophthalmology

All Medical and Dental Staff employed by the Trust are expected to comply with hospital health and safety policies, clinical governance and other risk management policies. The successful candidate will be responsible to, and work under the supervision of the 5 Consultant Ophthalmologists. The post will provide extensive experience in the management of general ophthalmic problems. He/she will be expected to actively participate in all audit projects within the department, take part in an on‑call rota, and participate in evening clinics with booked urgent patients. This post is non‑residential, but accommodation is subject to availability for which there will be a charge. The post holder will also be involved in the supervision and training of junior doctors and medical students within the hospital. A regular medical‑student teaching commitment is required. Candidates who are unable, for personal reasons, to work full‑time will be eligible to be considered for the post. Job‑share applicants are also welcomed. Modifications of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with consultant colleagues.
Main duties of the job
The newly appointed specialist doctor will have a job plan based on 10 Programme Activities (PAs). The allocated PAs will be formed by a flexible combination of elective operating lists, outpatient clinics, ward rounds and on‑call duties in the future. Job responsibilities
* Diagnosis and treatment of patients in the medical retina and vitreo‑retinal clinics.
* Treatment of patients using laser procedures.
* Treatment of patients with intravitreal injections (e.g., age‑related macular degeneration).
* Management of acute ophthalmic conditions in the Booked Urgent Service clinics.
* Diagnosis and treatment of general ophthalmic conditions.
* Provide cover for clinics where there is a clinical need.
* Actively participate in all audit projects within the department.
* Participate in on‑call rota and evening clinics with booked urgent patients.
Qualifications / Experience
* Basic Medical Qualifications
* Membership of the Royal College of Ophthalmology
* Ability to carry out intravitreal injections
* Ability to carry out YAG and argon laser treatments independently
* Demonstrable postgraduate experience within ophthalmology
* Ability to practice independently
* Experience of working in eye casualty
* Fellowship in ophthalmology from one of the Royal Colleges
* Microsurgical experience
* Ability to operate unsupervised
* Ability to perform cataract surgery
* Ability to carry out FFA
* Evidence of acquired skills
* Full registration with the GMC
* Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies by August 2008 in line with GMC standards
* NHS experience
Language Skills
* Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.
* Ability to provide complete details of employment history.
Clinical Skills
* Technical knowledge and clinical expertise: capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement and prioritise clinical need. Demonstrates appropriate technical competence with potential for developing strong/complex clinical/diagnostic skills.
* Attendance at relevant courses, e.g. ALS, ALERTS or equivalent.
Academic / Research Skills
* Research skills: demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, research and evidence‑based practice, with potential to contribute to research.
* Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements.
* Evidence of active participation in audit.
* Evidence of contributing to teaching and learning of others.
* Evidence of participation in risk management and/or clinical/laboratory research.
Teaching Experience
* Ability to assist with the teaching of clinical and practical skills to undergraduate and ophthalmic surgical trainees.
