Job Description

It’s a fantastic time to work for the Environment Agency as we step forward to tackle the climate emergency. Do you want to help make England a better place to live and work in?

As a member of the FCRM Improvements Portfolio team, you will be supporting the Portfolio Management office and sub‑portfolio’s project and programme work, delivering over £150m of improvements over the next three years. You’ll play a critical role in informing the changes we deliver, enabling outcomes that protect communities and businesses from the devastating impacts of flooding.

Our Improvements Portfolio is a professional portfolio, programme and project management service in the Flood & Coastal Risk Management (FCRM) directorate. We drive innovation and continuous improvement across FCRM and Incident Management, playing a key part in delivering corporate and FCRM strategies and delivery plans across almost all national business improvement activities.

You will start up and inform new projects, help assure live projects, support our project managers, build relationships with the Portfolio Management Office and help improve and embed portfolio‑management and data practices. This is a great role for someone with data analytics and/or project management skills who wants experience at programme/portfolio level.

This role is not eligible for Skilled visa sponsorship.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role (usually virtual) and be available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity during an incident, which may attract additional payment and include full training. Alternative working arrangements and full support are available to enable you in your incident role.

Applications from those desiring full, shared or part‑time working arrangements are welcome. There is a good opportunity for blended home and office work. Our team is dispersed across the country and you can be based at one of our Environment Agency offices (subject to facilities approval). Some travel and overnight stay will be required.

Experience/skills Required

* Formal project / programme management experience is essential.
* Highly numerate with good data gathering, manipulation and interpretation skills, able to deal with large datasets and multiple users. Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel required; experience of Power BI, Tableau, or similar is desirable.
* Experience in a project support type role in a complex organisation using Agile and waterfall methodologies.
* Administrative and organisational skills, supporting regular meetings, agenda and minutes for the Portfolio governance cycles.
* Financial data management and project planning skills desirable.
* The ability to gain credibility, respect and cooperation throughout the business by showing appropriate collaborative behaviours.
* Experience in tackling and automating routine issues with a continuous improvement and problem‑solving mindset.
* An ability to work with uncertainty and find innovative solutions to solve problems.

We value a diverse workforce and welcome applications from all sections of the community. We are fully committed to having a diverse and inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve.

Benefits we offer include flexible working patterns, including job share, and a Guaranteed Interview Policy to support those with a disability.
