Overview
We’re looking for an experienced High Voltage Design Engineer to join our Engineering Design team in Haywards Heath. This is a technical role for someone who has moved beyond general electrical installation design and into power system engineering: substations, protection schemes, and grid connections up to 132kV. You’ll take ownership of electrical designs from concept through to commissioning support, working on ICP and renewable power projects. Your designs will be built and commissioned on site, so practical understanding of how substations and power systems behave in the field is essential.
We are also open to hearing from candidates interested in a Junior HV Design Engineer role.
Key responsibilities
* Produce electrical designs up to 132kV including substation layouts, single line diagrams, and protection wiring schedules
* Carry out power system studies in DigSilent, ETAP, or PSCAD: Load flow, fault level, protection coordination and dynamic simulations
* Design complete protection systems from first principles: Relay selection, CT sizing and interface schemes with DNO systems
* Prepare Functional Design Specifications (FDS), protection philosophies, and grid connection documentation (G99, G5/4, P28)
* Design earthing systems, cable routes, and substation layouts considering site constraints and buildability
* Support procurement with technical specifications for switchgear, transformers and protection relays
* Provide technical support during commissioning: responding to site queries, reviewing test results, and verifying protection settings
What you’ll need
* Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with a power systems specialism (or equivalent experience)
* Strong technical capability in power system design, not just general electrical installation
* Experience producing designs that have been constructed and commissioned on site
* Proficient in AutoCAD and power system software (DigSilent, ETAP, or similar)
* Solid understanding of UK regulations, DNO standards (G81), and ENA requirements
* Chartered or Incorporated Engineer (or working towards)
* Desirable: 5 years’ experience, DNO/IDNO design criteria, protection design from first principles, earthing design, 18th Edition, PSCAD.
What we offer
Competitive salary, profit-related pay, private medical, income protection, 4x death in service cover, 28 days holiday, pension, cycle to work, and proper support for chartership and CPD.
