Summary

Job Description for NIRO Senior Technical Advisor (Secondment):

NIRO is an independent arm of UKNNL setup to provide independent strategic advice and guidance to Government across a range of nuclear and energy-related activities. NIRO works with an ethical barrier to ensure government information does not favour UKNNL commercial activities and enables DESNZ to pay UKNNL for its advice. Crucially, independence is further enabled by having a balance of UKNNL staff and External seconded experts, all signing onto a NIRO Charter recognising the ethical barrier and adherence to its principles.

NIRO's operational purpose is to enhance the deployment of a safe, secure, sustainable, economic and reliable civil nuclear life cycle through high quality, informed and independent advice to Government. We do this through building strong relationships with Government, Industry, Regulators and Academia and represent the interests of Government nationally and internationally, as required.

This secondment opportunity is for a 6 month period and can be based in Risley or London.

Main Responsibilities for NIRO Senior Technical Advisor (Secondment):

* Accountable to Director of NIRO for providing technical and strategic advice to the department of DESNZ. The Secondee will provide high quality independent objective advice to Government on a range of topics. This will involve maintaining high quality relationships with Government officials, including operating as lead point of contact for Government on specific projects, and leading the development and provision of advice. They may be involved in a number of Government and Industry meetings with respect to specific nuclear topics and they may also represent and promote the UK, on behalf of Government, in key international fora.

Essential Criteria for NIRO Senior Technical Advisor (Secondment):

* A broad understanding of nuclear energy technologies with expertise relevant to the development of advanced nuclear technologies is essential.
* As well as an understanding of national and international nuclear energy policy issues, the secondee should have experience of working with customers and stakeholders, and the ability to engage constructively and effectively with Government and policy makers.
* Excellent communication skills are important, as is the ability to tailor messages to a variety of audiences. Thought leadership will be a key ingredient in moving the nuclear sector forward. As such NIRO roles will be filled from individuals that have a broad range of backgrounds enabling a diversity of thought across the department.
* Ability to obtain a minimum of BPSS level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment and criminal record checks).
