Consultant Geriatrician

A Consultant Geriatrician is required for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), part of University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The Department of Healthcare for Older People provides a comprehensive service for older adults, leading on the care of older adults across both hospital and community settings. The speciality wishes to recruit additional consultants: these are a combination of new and replacement posts. We welcome and can accommodate all sub-specialty interests and working less than full time can be accommodated. We provide front door frailty provision and comprehensive geriatric assessment to our local population.

The services offered at QEHB include:

*Inpatient care on Healthcare for Older People (HCOP) wards.

*Older Peoples Assessment & Liaison (OPAL) front door frailty

*Peri-operative medicine including ortho-geriatrics, major trauma service, peri-operative care of older people undergoing surgery (POPS) and onco-geriatrics.

*Sub-specialty clinics including movement disorders, frailty, falls and bone health.

*Academic geriatric medicine with established links to the University of Birmingham.

*Frailty virtual wards.

*Community geriatrics including in-reach services to the local community hubs.

Main duties of the job

Prerequisite:

*Must be entered onto the GMC register.

*Must possess MRCP or equivalent.

*Must be on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT in Geriatric & Internal Medicine

Key Clinical Responsibilities:

*Care of patients and administrative duties related to patient care.

*Contribution to undergraduate, post-graduate and continuing medical education activity.

*Regular participation in speciality and multidisciplinary meetings.

*Regular participation in quality improvement, audit, and research.

*Provision of cover for consultant colleagues periods of leave in accordance with Trust policy.

*Evening, weekend and bank holiday on-call commitments for specialty and internal medicine.

*Support of the speciality and wider hospital in emergencies

Indicative job plan*:

The post is 10 programmed activities, but working less than full time can be accommodated. The job plan will be tailored to a candidate's specialist interest, with opportunities available across acute and community settings.

8.0 PA Direct Clinical Care:

*7-day senior-led patient care

*Subspecialty work and associated administration

*Prospective cover for colleagues leave

*Up to 1PA for acute unselected medical take.

2.0 PA Supporting Professional Activity:

*Clinical governance/ Quality improvement

*Teaching

*Educational supervision

*A detailed job plan will be agreed with the post holder on appointment.

Job responsibilities

Development of a Frailty Same Day Emergency Care (FSDEC) and Frailty Speciality take providing early comprehensive geriatric assessment and expertise to the local population, coupled with greater community integration including expansion of the frailty virtual ward and increased involvement in our local care home population.

Further expansion of the POPS service providing specialist input into emergency general surgical and silver major trauma patients. An additional role will be establishing a geriatrician in the recently formed multi-disciplinary Extended Post-operative Care Units (EPOC), expansion of the peri-operative service to additional tertiary surgical specialities (e.g., thoracic surgery and neurosurgery) and instituting peri-operative links with other local units, for example the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH) NHS Foundation Trust.

Further development of onco-geriatrics with geriatrician presence in the cancer multi-disciplinary meetings helping to identify higher risk patients who would benefit from pre-operative assessment and enhanced post-operative care.

Increasing development of academic geriatric medicine with links to the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing at the University of Birmingham. QEHB host regular NIHR academic clinical fellows and lecturers, with an increasing portfolio of investigator led studies, focused on the biological mechanisms of ageing, multi-morbidity, and sarcopenia.

Expansion of the complex regional Parkinsons disease clinic with links to the neurosciences and neurosurgical departments for interventions such as Deep Brain Stimulation.

Support to inpatients at Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Norman Power Centre providing specialist geriatric rehabilitative expertise to the citys population. Opportunities at West Heath and Mosely Hall Hospitals include stroke and trauma rehabilitation whilst the focus at Norman Power Unit is enablement is a more appropriate care setting.

Qualifications

* Entered onto the GMC register.
* Possess MRCP or equivalent.
* CCT in Geriatric and General Medicine or within 6 months of CCT in Geriatric & General Medicine.
