Overview

The Communications Manager will work closely with the Centre Manager and the Centre Coordinator to support collaboration across the Centre. The role‑holder will be responsible for planning, delivering, and evaluating all Centre communications, with the objective of driving engagement in the Centre's research output, events, facilities, and funding calls. Communications should be appropriately tailored to the needs of internal and external audiences. The successful candidate will deliver day‑to‑day social/digital communications, refresh and maintain the Centre website, and liaise with communications colleagues at Cancer Research UK and our four partner institutes to ensure alignment. The role‑holder will also develop our longer‑term communications strategy to engage internal and external audiences. The Communications Manager should keep abreast of Centre activities and news for dissemination across communications channels. This role does not meet the eligibility requirements for a Skilled Worker Visa certificate of sponsorship under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. Therefore, UCL will not be able to sponsor individuals who require the right to work in the UK to carry out this role.

Application Process

Applications should include a CV and a Cover Letter: In the Cover Letter, please provide evidence of the essential and desirable criteria in the Person Specification part of the Job Description. (By including a Cover Letter, you can leave blank the “Why you have applied for this role” field in the application form, which is limited in the number of characters it will allow.) This is a part‑time role (0.5FTE) hosted at the UCL Cancer Institute. The post is initially funded until 31/03/2028. Closing Date: 21/04/2026 - 23:59 (UK time).

Qualifications

Successful candidates must have an undergraduate degree, or equivalent and have a recognised marketing or communications qualification or equivalent professional experience. Experience in evaluating marketing activity, and experience of developing and tailoring multi‑channel communications for a range of audiences are essential for the role. It is essential you have excellent IT skills (e.g., MS Office, Windows, social media platforms) and are a fluent internet user with a strong understanding of how websites work. Experience in a communications role in higher education, life science, research funder or a related sector and experience in using WordPress are desirable but not essential.

About the Centre

The Cancer Research UK City of London Centre was established in 2018 as a partnership between University College London, King’s College London, Queen Mary University of London, and The Francis Crick Institute. The Centre’s mission is to foster collaboration between cancer researchers at these four institutions, in order to transform cancer outcomes through effective biological therapies. The Centre aims to develop and implement effective biological cancer therapies based on deep understanding of tumour origins, evolution, and response to intervention, increasing treatment options and transforming outcomes in adult and paediatric cancers. The Centre supports PhD students, post‑doctoral researchers, technical staff and 400 group leaders. By uniting multidisciplinary academic and clinical expertise across the partnership, the Centre aims not only to significantly impact the development of biotherapeutics for the treatment of cancer, but also to revolutionise the way cancer research is conducted in London.
