Job overview

Maintenance Apprentice

We are looking to appoint a maintenance apprentice to join our experienced site team. The purpose of this role is to provide maintenance and caretaking to a high standard to ensure the safety of all those using the school site. This opportunity is suitable for someone looking to develop their skills in this area, who wishes to complete an apprenticeship in property maintenance, or another relevant area of construction. This would require attendance at college for one day per week; we envisage this course to be 'Property Maintenance Operative Level 2 Apprenticeship', however this can be discussed further at interview.

The school has a wide variety of maintenance requirements and whilst every member of the team is expected to turn their hand to any maintenance or caretaking task, some basic training (or sound experience) in either plumbing, general/ground maintenance, electrical/building maintenance or heating systems, together with experience of working in a school or educational establishment is desirable but not essential.

Working under the direction of the Site Manager, we are looking for someone who is flexible and practical in their approach to tasks, has a good knowledge of general maintenance and who can work well as part of a team and with all members of our school community.

Normal working hours for this position will be 36 hours Monday - Friday from 8:00 - 16:15 (16:00 on Friday) over 52 weeks per year, including one day per week at college. It is important that the successful candidate is flexible since these working hours may be subject to change depending on the needs of the school and the priorities of the day.

The maintenance team consists of three Senior Maintenance Assistants, three janitors and two Sports Hall Attendants.

Why work for us?

* St Bede's is a good place to work. Staff are friendly and supportive of one another: relationships between staff and pupils were recognised by Ofsted as 'exceptionally strong'.
* ECTs benefit from a well developed and comprehensive induction period programme. More experienced teachers are given the opportunity to participate in training which will help them to develop skills needed for middle and senior management roles.
* There are good on-site catering facilities. Staff are able to use the fitness facilities free of charge and to participate in sports activities.
* Music is a big part of school life and staff are welcome to join our senior choir and instrumental groups.
* We have a social event at the end of each term as well as occasional staff trips to the theatre.
* The school is situated in Redhill, a commuter belt town in the Surrey Fringe area. We are close to the M25 and there are good transport links to London and the South Coast from Redhill station which is about 15 minutes walk from the school. We also benefit from being within walking distance of beautiful countryside. Many staff live locally, others commute from Guildford, South London, Kent and East & West Sussex.

In March 2023 Ofsted carried out an inspection of St Bede's and judged the school outstanding.

St Bede's is a good place to work. The community is vibrant, focused on learning and caring for our students. Staff relationships are very strong, supportive and welcoming. Our students like the school and behaviour is outstanding. We have approximately 1900 mixed ability students aged This includes over 300 studying academic courses in the sixth form. Our GCSE exam results make us one of the highest performing non-selective state schools in the country reflecting the very effective three way partnership we enjoy; hardworking pupils, committed staff and supportive parents.

We welcome applications from ECTs and more experienced teachers. Whatever your level of experience, and regardless of whether you are a teacher or member of support staff, this is a school where you will have opportunity to develop. Teachers in their ECT years benefit from an excellent level of support through mentoring and a full ECT programme.

St Bede's is unique. This is the only state-funded school where Anglicans, Roman Catholic and the Free Churches are bound together in a formal partnership to provide a common Christian education, which values the distinctive contribution of each tradition. St Bede's is a charitable trust jointly held by the Anglican Diocese of Southwark and the RC Diocese of Arundel and Brighton. Staff can be of any religion, or none at all, but must be able to support the ethos of the school.

Our facilities are very good; staff have free access to fitness facilities and there is very good on-site catering. Teaching and support staff have opportunities to be involved in a very wide range of activities and visits. We are situated in Redhill Surrey with good transport links to both London and the south coast. We are very close to beautiful countryside. This area offers the best of all worlds

Our school is committed to the safeguarding of children so all appointments are subject to a satisfactory enhanced DBS check. Only applications made on our School Application form will be considered; we do not accept CVs or unsolicited testimonials. It is our policy always to request references prior to interview.
