Head of Business Support
Reports to: Managing Director
Location: Hemel Hempstead (with flexibility)
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm
Role Overview
The Head of Business Support is responsible for the leadership and effective operation of all central support functions across the business. This includes finance, HR, recruitment, fleet and internal business systems.
The role ensures strong governance, compliance, and efficient internal processes that support operational delivery and sustainable business growth. The position forms part of the senior leadership team and works closely with the Managing Director on strategic and operational matters.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Governance
* Lead and manage the Business Support function, setting clear priorities and expectations.
* Provide senior support to the Managing Director on business performance and strategy.
* Establish and maintain policies, procedures and internal controls.
* Ensure governance, compliance and risk management requirements are met.
Finance Oversight
* Provide senior oversight of finance activities including accounts payable, receivable and payroll support.
* Work with the Finance Manager to ensure accurate reporting and effective financial controls.
* Support budgeting, forecasting, cost control and cashflow management.
* Ensure compliance with statutory, audit and regulatory obligations.
HR and People Operations
* Oversee HR processes across the employee lifecycle, including contracts, policies and employee relations matters.
* Ensure employment law compliance and HR best practice.
* Support managers with people issues, performance management and organisational change.
Recruitment and Resourcing
* Oversee recruitment activity across the business using internal and external resources.
* Ensure recruitment processes are efficient, compliant and aligned with business needs.
* Support workforce planning to meet operational demand.
Systems, Fleet and Continuous Improvement
* Oversee internal systems supporting finance, HR, recruitment and administration.
* Drive process improvement, digitalisation and efficiency where appropriate.
* Provide oversight of fleet management including compliance, cost control and supplier relationships.
* Identify and address inefficiencies, risks and process gaps within Business Support.
Person Specification
Essential experience
* Senior experience in a Business Support, Operations or Corporate Services role.
* Strong understanding of finance, HR and recruitment within a UK business environment.
* Experience leading and developing multi‑disciplinary teams.
* Strong organisational, leadership and decision‑making skills.
Desirable experience
* Background in construction, engineering or a similar operational SME.
* Experience implementing process or systems improvements.
* Experience overseeing fleet operations and compliance.
* Knowledge of employment law and TUPE.
