The Role
As a Network Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. As a key member of our Network Operations team, you’ll play a vital role in supporting the contract to manage and operate Skynet, the UK Ministry of Defence’s (MOD) military satellite communications system and its associated ground stations.
On a day-to-day basis, you’ll be responsible for setting up, maintaining, and troubleshooting network infrastructure that underpins the Skynet Satellite System, ensuring secure and reliable communications for defence operations.
1. Produce detailed reports to validate network status and communicate findings to customers.
2. Collaborate with other Babcock teams on testing and repair activities to maintain system integrity.
3. Respond to customer queries and provide support with satellite acquisition processes.
4. Configure, maintain, and resolve faults within network systems supporting the Skynet Satellite System.
5. Conduct regular health checks on network infrastructure to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
This role is full time, 37 hours per week working Monday to Friday. Once confident in role, you will join a 1 week in 3 on-call rota.
Essential Experience of the Network Engineer
6. Working knowledge of digital broadcast technologies and how they integrate with network infrastructure.
7. Familiarity with satellite communications systems and their operational requirements would be advantageous.
8. Hands-on experience in configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting network systems.
9. Strong understanding of IP switching and routing, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex network issues.
10. A background in telecommunications, digital broadcasting and/or defence/military environments.
Qualifications for the Network Engineer
11. You’ll bring a proactive mindset and a strong willingness to learn and grow within a technically complex environment, backed by practical experience in network engineering including setup, maintenance, and fault resolution - even if you don’t hold formal qualifications.
