Job Summary

Applications are invited to join our forward-thinking, friendly department in Critical Care with the option of an associated specialty in either Anaesthesia, Acute Medicine, Emergency Medicine or Respiratory Medicine at Mid-Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful candidate will be based at Leighton Hospital in the leafy Cheshire countryside near Crewe and Nantwich – a beautiful Cheshire market town.

Within thirty minutes of the hospital are innumerable pretty towns and villages to reside in, plus beautiful walking and cycling routes at your door. There are also a great number of schools in the surrounding area with high Ofsted ratings in both the Independent and State Sectors.

The successful applicant must have full registration with the GMC and continue to hold a Licence to Practise. The applicant must also be on the Specialist Register or be within six months of obtaining their Certificate of Completion of Training.

The post is offered on a full‑time basis; however, the Trust would welcome discussion with individuals looking for a more flexible working pattern to support a different work life balance.

Shortlisted candidates will be expected to visit the department prior to interview.

The proposed AAC date is 21.01.2026.


Responsibilities

* Clinical emphasis on Adult Critical Care and one of the following specialties: Acute Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Emergency Medicine or Anaesthesia.
* Provide medical cover for the Critical Care Unit in collaboration with a team of senior consultants.
* Take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients admitted to Critical Care.
* Deliver interventions expected of a Critical Care Consultant, including advanced airway management, bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomy and insertion of vascular access devices.
* Support and develop links across specialties, enhancing patient outcomes and experience.
* Participate in clinical governance, audit and improvement initiatives.


Person Specification

Essential Qualifications & Experience

* Clinical training and experience in Intensive Care Medicine to the standard required for gaining a UK CCT in critical care medicine.
* Strong interest and experience in critical care medicine.
* Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of emergency and elective problems within the ICM specialty.
* Full GMC Registration.
* Dual CCT in an allied specialty (e.g. Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine or other Medical Specialty).
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Intensive Care Medicine (CCT, CESR or European Community Rights).
* MBBS or equivalent.
* An appropriate higher qualification such as FRCA, FFICM, EDIC, MRCP.
* Minimum of 1 year NHS service for substantive consultant appointments.
* Advanced Life Support.

Desirable

* Clinical experience in relevant allied specialties with demonstrably achieved learning objectives supporting future practice in Critical Care.

Teaching Experience

* Eligibility to be a GMC recognised Clinical Supervisor.
* Active regular participation in teaching and training of medical and paramedical colleagues.
* Eligibility to be a GMC recognised Educational Supervisor.
* Experience in medical education including regional teaching.
* Life support course instructor.

Clinical Governance

* Active consistent engagement with clinical audit.
* Ability to develop evidence‑based practice.
* Regular commitment to continuing medical education.
* Evidence of reflective practice.
* Evidence of implementing change to improve patient care.
* Involvement in clinical research.
* Presentations at regional and national meetings.
* Publications in peer‑reviewed journal.

Personal Attributes

Management
