A little more about your role…

WSP’s Project Management, Commercial and Technical Advisory (PMCM) team in Sheffield is seeking a Quantity Surveyor to support the delivery of projects under the Department for Education’s School Rebuilding Programme (SRP).

You will play a key role in providing commercial and cost management services across projects delivered from early feasibility through to construction and final account, working closely with Project Managers / Employer’s Agents, design teams and contractors. The role is client‑facing and involves direct engagement with the DfE Project Manager and Project Director, supporting informed decision‑making and robust commercial governance.

With a strong and growing pipeline of SRP projects, this role offers the opportunity to contribute to high‑profile education schemes, influence projects from early feasibility stage, and develop specialist expertise in DfE delivery frameworks, supported by an experienced and collaborative Sheffield‑based team.

Key Responsibilities

* Provide cost management and commercial support across DfE SRP projects from feasibility through to completion
* Prepare and develop cost plans, cost reports and financial forecasts at key project stages.
* Support early‑stage feasibility work, option appraisal and affordability assessments. Work collaboratively with the Project Manager / Technical Advisor, supporting project controls, reporting and governance.
* Manage procurement activities, including preparation of tender documentation, tender analysis and contractor appointment.
* Administer projects primarily under JCT Design & Build 2016 and 2024 forms of contract.
* Assess and agree applications for payment, manage variations and change control, and maintain robust cost and risk registers.
* Support risk and value management, including participation in value engineering workshops.
* Prepare regular financial and commercial reports for clients and internal stakeholders.
* Support agreement of final accounts and post‑contract commercial close‑out.
* Build and maintain effective working relationships with clients, consultants and contractors.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…

* A qualification in Quantity Surveying or Commercial Management (HNC, HND, BSc or MSc).
* Experience working as a Quantity Surveyor within the built environment, ideally on construction or refurbishment projects.
* Experience within the education sector or public‑sector projects is desirable but not essential.
* Working knowledge of JCT Design & Build contracts and their practical application.
* Strong understanding of cost planning, procurement, change control and commercial reporting.
* Confidence operating in a client‑facing role, working collaboratively within multi‑disciplinary teams.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills, with good organisational and time‑management abilities.
* Competent user of Microsoft 365 and project controls tools (e.g. MS Project); familiarity with digital and AI‑enabled tools (e.g. MS Copilot) is advantageous.

Professional Development

Working towards or holding a relevant professional accreditation, such as:

* MRICS / AssocRICS
* MCIOB
* MAPM / ChPP

WSP actively supports professional development, chartership and training, with mentoring from experienced colleagues currently delivering the SRP framework.

Location & Working Pattern

The role will be based in WSP’s Sheffield office, with hybrid working arrangements. Site visits will be required as and when necessary, typically to support progress meetings and key commercial activities during the construction phase; this is not a site‑based role.
