Mission of the position
The Team Leader is responsible for overseeing day-to-day work within the team(s). This includes ensuring production runs smoothly, health and safety for the team, product and process quality, timely targets, and developing and motivating team members.
Functions And Responsibilities
* Lead the team(s) performing a wide variety of assembly tasks on the production line using a range of machinery and hand tools.
* Ensure work is completed in accordance with documentation and specifications, achieving safety, quality and production targets with the team.
* Support quality, productivity and process improvement initiatives.
* Keep the work area clean, well-organised and safe; adhere to housekeeping processes.
* Carry out lean production activities.
* Ensure all staff understand and comply with rules, regulations, standards and policies.
* Organise and communicate job expectations to team(s).
* Monitor progress to achieve objectives and targets on time.
* Ensure records are completed accurately and on time.
* Liaise with the manager to ensure adequate resources are in place to meet planned activities.
* Review work in progress and allocate tasks for maximum efficiency.
* Ensure correct use and operation of machinery and carry out daily maintenance and safety checks; conduct team briefings and toolbox talks.
* Ensure team members are competent and have received appropriate training; assess competence as required.
* Provide training and act as coach/mentor to develop skills within the team and others.
* Participate in induction and ongoing training of employees.
* Act as First Aider and/or Fire Marshal as required.
* Proactively seek process improvements and efficiency savings; coordinate with line manager on improvements and ensure materials are available to prevent shortages.
* Ensure equipment/plant is maintained and fully operational, reporting damage or breakdowns promptly.
* Report progress and any constraints affecting work plans; support other teams and management as required.
* Demonstrate commitment to safe working practices in a safety-critical environment.
Training and Qualifications
Essential
* NVQ Level 3 / Modern Apprenticeship in a related field
* Qualified Assessor / Train the Trainer or prepared to study towards
Desirable
* IOSH Qualification or equivalent safety qualification
* ILM Level 3 in Leadership & Management (or equivalent)
Experience
* Previous experience of leading a team on a shift basis in a modern manufacturing or heavy engineering environment.
* Good knowledge of plant operating procedures and lean manufacturing tools and techniques.
* Experience in a similar role within manufacturing; ability to work autonomously or as part of a team; proactive, focused and adaptable in a pressurised environment.
* Strong organisational, communication and interpersonal skills; ability to maintain accurate records.
* Promoting safe working practices in a safety-critical workplace; ability to work flexibly across a broad range of activities.
