Orthopaedic Practitioner
Band 5 Orthopaedic Practitioner (or band 3 trainee) position within the Orthopaedic Outpatient Department. 30 hours per week, flexible 8:00‑18:00, Monday to Friday.
Main duties
* Provide inpatient, outpatient and A&E casting service, delivering safe, effective casts, splints and braces in line with Trust policies and national guidance.
* Apply, modify and remove casts, splints and braces, adapting as needed for patient safety and comfort.
* Perform basic clinical tasks such as dressing application/removal, suture and clip removal where trained.
* Conduct neurovascular safety checks, limb positioning and patient education on cast care and mobility.
* Recognise complications and escalates concerns promptly to the appropriate clinician.
* Maintain accurate, contemporaneous clinical documentation.
* Contribute to smooth patient flow within fracture clinic and outpatient areas.
* Support a culture of learning, professionalism, teamwork; for Band 5 holders, supervise and train trainee plaster technicians and Band 3 staff.
Training & Qualifications
* British Casting Certificate (BCC) Orthopaedic Practitioner course or equivalent.
* Active registration on the BOA Register.
* GCSE Standard Pass Grades (4 and above or AC) and Level 2/3 qualification in Health and Social Care or equivalent. (Optionally NVQ Level 2 or above.)
* Additional specialist casting courses.
Experience & Knowledge
* Recent clinical skills and competency with a variety of casting materials and equipment.
* Ability to construct specialised casts and splints, with routine and non‑routine adaptations.
* Relevant clinical or healthcare experience, with an interest in developing orthopaedic and plaster room skills.
* Teamworking experience, supporting senior staff, understanding the importance of communication, professionalism and escalation.
* Knowledge of walking aids, slings or splints and patient education on their safe use.
* Awareness of basic wound care principles, with willingness to develop further.
Skills & Ability
* Effective written and verbal communication in English, with accurate clinical notes.
* Capability to support across elective and trauma clinics and work across sites (Winchester, Basingstoke, Andover).
* Physically capable of undertaking prolonged standing and meeting the demands of busy outpatient service.
* Flexible working hours and willingness to work across sites.
* Customer service experience, including dealing with complaints.

Salary
£32,073 to £39,043 per annum, pro rata.
