Product Design Engineer – KTP Associate – Fixed term for 24 months
Birmingham City University is seeking a highly qualified graduate (graduated within the last five years) for the role of Product Design Engineer (KTP Associate).
This position offers an exciting opportunity to collaborate with leading academics at Birmingham City University, applying knowledge and technical innovation on-site at the company.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum 2.1 university qualification in a relevant subject and graduated within the last five years.

Personal Training & Development Budget:
The successful candidate will have access to a personal development budget of £4,000 for upskilling during the project.
The candidate will be employed by Birmingham City University and seconded to work full-time at Barton Storage Systems Limited to deliver the 24-month KTP project in partnership with Birmingham City University and Barton Storage Systems.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of the Product Design Engineer (KTP Associate) include:
1. Executing a work plan to accelerate new product development and enable intellectual property protection by creating an in-house design resource and embedding digital design into Barton Storage Systems.
2. Developing new materials and designs for load-bearing structures in custom-built shelving products, including new product ranges using manufacturing techniques like injection moulding, steel fabrication, and aluminium extrusions.
3. Adapting to changes in the work plan during the contract and remaining flexible.
4. Participating in regular meetings and presentations with management and the design team.
5. Applying knowledge to commercial projects, solving problems, creating prototypes with new materials, and driving value.
The candidate should:
* Implement innovative design using computer technology for manufacturing storage solutions.
* Interact with senior management, suppliers, clients, and academics.
Key attributes include:
* A relevant degree (minimum 2:1 or first class), preferably in Mechanical Engineering or Product Design, with a Master’s degree accepted.
* Technical and professional knowledge relevant to the role.
* Proficiency in 3D software like ANSYS or SolidWorks.
* Creativity in using innovative materials in product development.
* Management, project management, research skills, and commercial awareness.
* Excellent communication skills, ability to work under pressure, team skills, and self-management.
* Leadership skills and experience with SolidWorks.
* Additional MSc/PhD qualification or relevant experience is desirable.
* Practical manufacturing experience, a clean driving license, and willingness to travel.
