Approved Mental Health Professional including Out of Hours

Are you an Approved Mental Health Professional looking for a change? Or an experienced social worker keen to train as an AMHP?

The way we deliver AMHP services in Sunderland continues to develop and we are looking to recruit an AMHP (or AMHP trainee) to join us on this innovative journey. As a Sunderland AMHP you will join a small, dedicated and flexible 24/7/365 team responding to requests under the Mental Health Act 1983.

You will be an autonomous professional, comfortable working independently and with a keen desire to balance individual rights, positive risk taking and justice against the admission criteria set out in the MHA. To help you achieve this you will have the guidance and support of an experienced team manager and senior practitioner as well as ongoing peer support.

In daytime hours Mental Health Act assessments are arranged by the MHA coordinator based at Hopewood Park and we work closely with colleagues in the Crisis Team, bed management and when necessary Street Triage to respond in a timely, pro‑active and safe manner. All AMHPs are also expected to hold a small case load of Part 3 Ministry of Justice cases supporting discharge planning and providing social supervision for restricted patients / conditionally discharged people.

The core AMHP teamwork 24/7/365 with a mixture of out of hours and daytime working on a rota basis. You will be expected to complete statutory paperwork to legally required timescales and maintain electronic records to meet best quality and performance standards. A flexible team player you will demonstrate the council’s values to enable, innovate and respect in all your interactions with the public and professionals.

As a Sunderland AMHP you will have access to five days per annum dedicated AMHP training provided regionally by DAC Beachcroft as well as monthly AMHP forums. We promote a balanced hybrid approach to work including work from home, touchdown bases and CNTW sites. We recognise that this is not a 9‑5 job and work closely with our AMHPs to ensure a healthy work‑life balance can be maintained.

For more information and an informal discussion please contact Stewart Graham, AMHP Lead on 07917 271379.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore will be subject to a DBS check from the Disclosure and Barring Service.
