Would you like the opportunity to support multi-centre trials and locally led original research with Lancashire Teaching Hospitals?

We are offering an enthusiastic and interested candidate the opportunity to join our team of experienced and highly skilled Research Nurses.

As part of the Senior research team, you will lead and support the development and delivery of research trials within the clinical setting. Ideally you will have some clinical experience of supporting unwell patients.

Our current portfolio is a diverse blend of high quality commercial and academic clinical trials. Lancashire Teaching Hospitals provides tertiary services to a population of 1.5 million and is the Trauma Centre for Lancashire and Cumbria.

Main duties of the job

You will provide strong leadership and professional practice to support day to day efficient running a team and research trials within the clinical area. You will have responsibility for ensuring the planning, delivery and evaluation of care to meet the personalised health and wellbeing care needs of patients, in line with the Trust’s Values & Nursing & Midwifery Professional Framework.

You will act as a strong role model and provide development, clinical supervision and advice for other non-research staff and students to support them in reaching their full potential.

You will actively engage in research and development opportunities for the clinical service to help promote the study and get people involved, and support the Centre for Health Research and Innovation as part of the acute research delivery team.

The role you will be to lead the acute research delivery team to screen, coordinate, recruit and manage the administration of the medications or interventions on the patients who are recruited into studies in various specialities.

You will also be involved with data administration and you will be supported by a band 8, other admin, clinical support staff and medics including doctors in each speciality.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. To lead and support the acute research team in ensuring the provision of excellent care with compassion for patients, relatives and visitors who are cared for when on trials within the hospital or at home.
2. Ensure a high standard of nursing is delivered by self and others based on assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care to meet patients’ needs in accordance with agreed local and National standards and evidence-based guidelines.
3. Demonstrates expert communication skills throughout the research process to assess eligibility and provide on-going advice and information to participants about their participation in research in order to facilitate effective informed consent
4. Provide advice and support to other members of the multidisciplinary team about ICH GCP, ethics approval and amendments, study set up, delivery and completion.
5. Promote and collaborate in developing good working relationships, maintaining good communication systems with departments to ensure that participants have an effective and efficient research experience
6. Contribute to clinical and research governance processes including adverse event/incident reporting collaborating with any investigations and management of these.
7. Be actively involved in promoting the work of the research and innovation department
8. Act as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team and the organisation
9. Be responsible for the delivery and co-ordination of care, through appropriate professional practice, delegation and supervision of duties carried out by junior staff
10. Set, monitor and maintain standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care.
11. Proactively manage risk and maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines.
12. Communicate all relevant information to the multidisciplinary team internally and with external organisations as required, to ensure seamless care.
13. Promote provision of patient education and health promotion
14. Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals
15. To participate in education and training of junior staff.
16. Maintain and develop own professional competence and seek to extend the scope of personal knowledge and skills within scope of role and professional practice.
17. Facilitate the delivery of research trials within the hospital in coordination and collaboration with the principal investigators other research delivery teams.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

18. Nursing NMC professional qualification and current registration
19. Degree in relevant subject or equivalent post registration qualifications
20. Teaching and assessing/mentoring qualification
21. Evidence of continuous professional development

Desirable criteria

22. Management/Leadership qualification or equivalent experience
23. Postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject or demonstrable experience

Knowledge

Essential criteria

24. Recent clinical experience
25. Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
26. Knowledge of ethical issues
27. Experience of providing leadership in a clinical setting
28. Knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of a clinical research nurse
29. Experience of leading or supporting an initiative within a clinical environment
