Cemetery Operative Pay: £13.47 per hour Contract Type: Fixed-term (8 April 2026 25 September 2026) Location: Church Road, Castlereagh, Belfast, BT8 7TD Working Hours: Monday to Thursday: 8:00 AM 4:00 PM Friday: 8:00 AM 3:30 PM Overview We are seeking a reliable and compassionate Cemetery Operative to support the day-to-day operations of a busy cemetery service in Castlereagh. The successful candidate will assist with burial services, cemetery maintenance, and providing support to members of the public during sensitive occasions. This role requires someone who can work respectfully in a sensitive environment while maintaining high standards of grounds maintenance and customer care. Key Responsibilities Assist in the management and delivery of funeral and burial services with professionalism and respect. Operate cremation equipment and assist with chapel services, including music coordination where required. Undertake grave digging and prepare graves for burial services. Carry out cemetery maintenance including grass cutting, hedge trimming, planting, and general horticultural duties. Inspect and monitor headstones for safety and report or address any issues. Provide assistance to visitors and guide members of the public to graves or memorials when required. Maintain tools, machinery, vehicles, and equipment used within the cemetery. Ensure all work is carried out in line with health and safety regulations and cremation compliance requirements. Participate in training and development as required. Essential Criteria Applicants must have at least 1 year of experience in: Commercial horticultural or grounds maintenance work (such as grass cutting, planting, hedge trimming). Working with members of the public in sensitive environments such as funeral services, cemeteries, or similar settings. Skills and Attributes Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to interact with the public in a respectful and compassionate manner. Good problem-solving and decision-making ability. Knowledge of horticulture and grounds maintenance practices. Strong awareness of health and safety procedures. Ability to work as part of a team and plan work effectively. Basic IT skills. Desirable Two or more years of relevant experience in a similar role.
