THE BUSINESS
Our client based in Newton Aycliffe is seeking to appoint a Plasma cutter to work a permanent day shift Monday to Friday – 7am-4:30pm. This is a temp to perm role following a successful probation period. The organisation has a strong local footprint in the Newton Aycliffe area and they are strategically placed with a good road network. The organisation has full in-house capabilities meaning they offer estimating, designing, detailing, specialist coats, installation and contract management. As a CNC Plasma Cutter specialising in Structural work, you will work in a state-of-the-art facility covering 90,000 sq. feet. The organisation also has a very healthy order book, they can offer role security and a chance to work on both local & national projects. They have also recently made a large £2.5M investment aimed at improving the automation of their site. Our client supplies structural steel and fabricated parts to serve the construction trade in the formation of institutions such as schools, hospitals, universities and MOD contracts.
THE ROLE
8. Set up, program, and operate CNC burner and plasma cutting equipment to cut carbon steel, stainless steel, and other materials in accordance with engineering drawings, cut lists, and nesting layouts.
9. Interpret blueprints and specifications to verify material type, thickness, tolerances, and cut requirements before processing.
10. Load and edit CNC programs, adjust torch height, amperage, gas flow, and cutting speeds to ensure quality cuts, dimensional accuracy, and efficient production.
11. Monitor cutting operations to identify defects such as dross, warping, or improper kerf, making real-time adjustments as needed to minimize scrap and rework.
12. Perform routine maintenance including cleaning tables, replacing consumables (tips, electrodes, nozzles), and conducting daily machine inspections.
13. Safely handle and position material using overhead cranes, forklifts, or lifting devices in compliance with company safety policies.
14. Maintain a clean and organized work area, accurately complete production and quality documentation, and report equipment issues or safety concerns to supervision.
15. Follow all safety procedures related to plasma cutting, compressed gases, PPE, and lockout/tagout requirements.
THE PERSON
16. Proven experience operating CNC plasma cutting machines
17. Strong understanding of CNC programming and G-code
18. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications
19. Knowledge steel cutting parameters
20. Understanding of tolerances, material thicknesses, and cut quality requirements
