As a Phlebotomist, you will play a vital role in patient care by collecting blood samples safely and efficiently from patients across hospital wards, outpatient clinics, and community locations throughout South Essex.
This is a full-time, permanent position (37.5 hours per week) based at Pathology First – Basildon & Southend Hospitals.
Your work will directly support accurate and timely laboratory results, which are essential for clinical diagnosis and treatment. You will join a supportive and professional team while developing your skills through a structured Phlebotomy Academy programme.
Main duties of the job
1. Deliver safe and professional blood sample collection in line with infection control and identification protocols
2. Work across hospital wards, outpatient clinics, and community settings
3. Provide reassurance and high-quality care to patients, maintaining dignity and professionalism
4. Accurately label, handle, and dispatch specimens according to procedures
5. Maintain accurate patient records and documentation (manual and electronic)
6. Use appropriate PPE and adhere to health and safety standards
7. Participate in weekend and bank holiday rotas as part of a flexible shift pattern
8. Complete mandatory training including First Aid, manual handling, and phlebotomy updates
9. Support service improvement and patient satisfaction initiatives

To provide a high-quality phlebotomy service by collecting blood samples safely and efficiently, ensuring patient comfort, and supporting accurate diagnostic testing.
10. Perform venepuncture safely and confidently following training
11. Ensure all samples are correctly identified, labelled, and transported
12. Maintain strict infection prevention and control standards

Essential criteria
18. A good general education (GCSEs or equivalent
19. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a caring approach.
20. Willingness to complete formal phlebotomy and First Aid training.
21. Ability to follow procedures accurately and maintain attention to detail
22. Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle (for multi-site work).
23. Flexibility to work varied shifts, including weekends and bank holidays.
