Job Title: Commercial and Operations Manager
Reports to: Master of the Lord Leycester
Salary: £33,000 - £35,000 per annum (full-time), based on experience
Contract: 12 months fixed term contract, with potential to be extended
Closing Date: 2nd August 2025
PURPOSE OF THE POST
As a senior member of the Lord Leycester’s staff, the post holder will be responsible for co-ordinating the daily management and operations of the Lord Leycester. They will work with other members of the team to grow visitor numbers and deliver a high-quality commercial function, ensuring the Lord Leycester meets financial performance targets and remains a successful heritage site and financially viable charity.
The role will require the postholder to work a Duty Manager rota that will include some weekends and Bank Holidays, as well as evenings when required.
Key Responsibilities
Visitor Experience & Commercial Operations
* Lead the delivery of excellent visitor experiences, ensuring all operations contribute to a welcoming, informative, and inclusive environment.
* Develop and deliver strategies to maximise income from admissions, retail, catering, events, and venue hire in line with the organisation’s commercial objectives.
* Monitor and report on visitor numbers, dwell time, feedback, and income streams, using insights to drive improvements and respond to trends.
* Oversee the relationship with contracted catering and retail providers, ensuring high standards, value for money, and alignment with the organisation’s values.
* Line management of the Operations Assistant and Gardens, Grounds Manager as well as the Visitor Services team made up of casual staff and volunteers; recruit, train, develop, and appraise team members to deliver exceptional service.
* Oversee staff scheduling and resource planning to ensure the site is appropriately staffed and operational at all times.
* Foster a positive, collaborative team culture that prioritises diversity, inclusion, professionalism, and customer care.
Facilities, Grounds & Compliance
* Work closely with the Gardens and Grounds Manager to oversee the implementation of the Management and Maintenance Plan.
* Serve as the Health & Safety lead for the organisation, ensuring statutory and internal compliance across fire safety, licensing, food hygiene, safeguarding, risk assessments, and GDPR.
* Oversee security and daily operational logistics including opening and closing of the site.
Data, Insights & Business Planning
* Collect, analyse, and interpret data to inform marketing and operational decisions and evaluate performance against business goals.
* Contribute to strategic planning and budgeting processes, producing business cases and financial reports as needed.
Marketing & Stakeholder Engagement
* Work closely with the team and PR Consultant to promote and market the Lord Leycester as a visitor attraction and commercial venue.
* Represent the Lord Leycester at external events and build relationships with heritage and tourism networks at local, regional, and national levels.
* Deputise for the Master when required, acting as an ambassador for the organisation.
Person Specification
Essential Experience & Knowledge
* Proven experience managing operations in a heritage, cultural, or visitor attraction setting.
* Demonstrable track record of driving commercial performance, including retail, catering, and event income.
* Experience leading and motivating diverse teams, including volunteers.
* Strong understanding of operational compliance, including health & safety, licensing, and GDPR.
* Experience with business planning and financial management.
* Experience managing third-party contracts and service level agreements.
* Fire Warden and First Aid qualifications.
* Knowledge of audience development and access in heritage environments.
* Experience or understanding of marketing and promotion.
Skills & Attributes
* Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
* Strong leadership and people management capabilities.
* Excellent organisational and problem-solving abilities.
* Competent IT user with experience in EPOS systems, Microsoft Office, and basic data analysis.
* Calm under pressure, with the ability to work flexibly, including weekends and occasional evenings.
