Overview

These two Consultant Neonatologist 10 PA posts are full‑time offers at 10 PA. The neonatal unit is the regional surgical neonatal intensive care unit in the West Midlands, with 44 cots including 24 intensive care, high‑dependency and 20 special‑care cots. Activity is high and the unit is among the busiest in the country, supporting a complex and varied case mix. A separate Transitional Care ward accommodates up to 16 babies and 12 mothers.


Employment Details

All consultant job plans include 1.5 core SPA and 1 SPA for a lead role. Post (A) includes 1 SPA for the Fetal Medicine / Palliative Care lead; Post (B) includes 1 SPA for Education and Guidelines lead.


Lead Roles

* Fetal Medicine / Palliative Care Lead: liaise closely with the Fetal Medicine and Palliative Care teams to establish clear pathways of neonatal involvement and enhance palliative care from antenatal counselling and planning through to post‑mortem care.
* Education and Guidelines Lead: coordinate the extensive education programme, link with the Governance Team to translate incident and review outcomes into measurable learning opportunities, and manage the planning and implementation of network guidelines, as well as the updating of local guidelines and SOPs.


Key Responsibilities

* Be a key member of the Trust’s senior medical team.
* Collaborate with the Clinical Service Lead, other consultant neonatologists, the Directorate Manager and the senior nursing team to achieve the Directorate’s objectives and implement key neonatal strategies.
* Support surgical neonatal patients at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
* Participate in outpatient follow‑up of neonates.
* Maintain high clinical standards in the management of well and ill newborns.
* Share responsibility for day‑to‑day management of the NICU and all related duties.
* Accept on‑call commitments for the NICU on a basic 1‑in‑14 basis; night shifts are non‑resident, but presence on the unit, if required, must be attainable within 30 minutes.
* Teach and train junior staff, neonatal nursing staff, visiting medical staff, midwives and medical students.
* Maintain appropriate CPD and mandatory training.
* Participate in Health Education West Midlands activities, including ARCPs and regional training days.
* Engage in West Midlands Operational Delivery Network activities.
* Lead and participate in clinical governance, appraisal and revalidation where indicated.
