Principal Clinical Scientist, Radiology Physics

Posted 18 September 2025. Salary £64,455 to £74,896 per annum. Permanent full‑time with flexible working. Location: Kent & Canterbury Hospital, Canterbury, CT1 3NG. Band 8b. Reference number: 344‑0875DCB‑I.


Job Summary

Radiology Physics forms part of the expanding Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Department at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust. The department delivers scientific, technical and regulatory support for a wide range of radiology facilities, including X‑ray, ultrasound, laser and interventional services. The role offers training and career development opportunities, flexible working and a relocation package.


Main Duties

* Operate independently to provide specialised scientific, technical and regulatory expertise to the Trust and partner organisations.
* Plan, prioritise and manage workload and projects, responding promptly to urgent requests.
* Collaborate with the Radiology Physics Team Lead to deliver a safe, efficient and effective service.
* Act in at least two of the following statutory roles: Medical Physics Expert (MPE), Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) and Radioactive Waste Adviser (RWA) as required by relevant regulations.
* Support the chair of the Trust Radiation Advisory Committee by implementing and auditing legislation and guidance.
* Teach, train and develop staff and students to achieve and maintain competence and accreditation in statutory roles.
* Initiate and participate in research and development activities.
* Supervise the work of staff and students and maintain RPA, MPE, RWA accreditation in accordance with legislation.


Essential Qualifications and Training

* Honours degree in a relevant subject.
* MSc in a relevant subject (preferred).
* MIPEM qualification.
* HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist.
* MPE, RPA and RWA certification (mandatory).
* Evidence of passing the required statutory roles and maintaining current accreditation.


Desirable Qualifications

* PhD in a relevant field.
* CSci qualification.
* Management training.


Essential Clinical Skills and Experience

* Extensive experience in diagnostic radiology physics and radiation protection.
* Excellent communication skills at all levels.
* Strong organisational and prioritisation abilities.
* Capability to supervise and manage staff.
* Demonstrated initiative in specialist area of competence.
* High manual dexterity and accuracy with sophisticated testing equipment.
* Capacity to work accurately and quickly, applying scientific methods to solve complex problems.
* Ability to concentrate on prolonged complex tasks in unpredictable work patterns.


Desirable Experience

* Record of publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
* Participation in national professional affairs.
* Project management experience.
* Experience advising on the safe use of sealed and unsealed sources of ionising radiation.
* Knowledge of other imaging modalities (Ultrasound, NM, MRI, etc.).
* Experience advising on safe use of lasers and other optical radiation.


Governance and Reporting

* Report to the Trust Radiation Advisory Committee.
* Support Medical Physics Governance Groups (Quality & Risk; Finance & Performance).

Additional Requirements

* Adherence to the Trust’s vision, mission and values.
* Ability to lift medium/heavy equipment (≥10 kg) occasionally.
* Hold a valid UK driving licence.
