Overview
Groundsperson | Kingston upon Thames — 40 hours per week, permanent/full-time. Salary is competitive and dependent on experience, with benefits. The role involves hands-on preparation and maintenance of cricket squares and football pitches, leading one other member of staff, and acting as a key point of contact for clients and sports clubs.
Key Responsibilities
* Leadership & Management
o Lead, mentor, and motivate one other team member to achieve high standards.
o Plan and delegate daily and weekly work schedules, ensuring efficient and timely completion of tasks.
o Develop and maintain excellent communication with client representatives and sports clubs.
o Ensure all work is performed in compliance with health and safety legislation.
o Maintain machinery, vehicles, and equipment in good working order, reporting any faults.
* Sports Pitch Management (Cricket & Football)
o Cricket Squares: Oversee and perform pitch preparation, including mowing, rolling, marking, and scarifying to ensure a high-quality playing surface.
o Manage the turf with regular mowing, watering, aeration, and feeding schedules.
o Conduct end-of-season renovations (seeding, topdressing, overseeding) to prepare for the following season.
o Football Pitches: Carry out line marking for matches and training, and maintain pitches through mowing, aeration, and fertilisation to promote healthy turf and prevent soil compaction.
o Ensure safe setup, dismantling, and storage of goalposts and pitch equipment.
* Athletics & Event Preparation
o Mark athletics facilities accurately for multi-lane tracks and field event areas.
o Prepare ground surfaces for seasonal events (e.g., school sports days), ensuring they are safe and clearly marked.
* General Maintenance & Duties
o Assist with upkeep of other sports surfaces and landscaped areas as required.
o Carry out routine checks and basic maintenance on grounds machinery and equipment, ensuring safety and good working order.
o Uphold health and safety standards on-site and report hazards promptly.
About You
We are looking for a dedicated individual with a meticulous eye for detail and a proven track record in fine turf management.
Essential Criteria
* Significant experience in maintaining high-quality fine turf surfaces, particularly cricket squares and football pitches.
* Proven supervisory or leadership experience.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with colleagues, clients, and the public.
* A thorough understanding of relevant Health and Safety legislation.
* A full, clean UK driving licence is required.
Desirable Criteria
* Qualifications in sports turf management (e.g., from the Grounds Management Association).
* PA1 & PA6 spraying certificates.
* Experience towing trailers.
