Overview
It’s a fantastic time to work for the Environment Agency as we tackle the climate emergency. You will support the Flood & Coastal Risk Management (FCRM) Improvements Portfolio, assisting the Portfolio Management Office and sub-portfolio project and programme work delivering over £150m of improvements in the next three years. This role helps inform changes we deliver to protect communities and businesses from flooding. The Improvements Portfolio is a professional portfolio, programme and project management service in the FCRM directorate, driving innovation and continuous improvement across FCRM and Incident Management and contributing to national strategies and delivery plans.
This role starts up and informs new projects, helps assure live projects, supports project managers, and builds relationships with the Portfolio Management Office. It is suitable for someone with data analytics and/or project management skills who wants experience at programme/portfolio level.
The role is not eligible for Skilled visa sponsorship. Responding to incidents is a central and important part of our work. You will be required to have an incident role (usually virtual) and be available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and includes full training. Alternative working arrangements and full support will be provided to enable you in your incident role.
Responsibilities
* Start up and inform new projects; help assure live projects; support project managers.
* Build relationships with the Portfolio Management Office and improve and embed portfolio management and data practices.
* Contribute to the professional portfolio, programme and project management service within the FCRM directorate and support delivery plans and strategies.
* Support innovative improvement projects contributing to the National Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Strategy, Asset Management Strategy, and Mapping, Modelling and Data Plans.
Experience/Skills Required
* Formal project/programme management experience is essential.
* Highly numerate with data gathering, manipulation and interpretation skills; able to work with large datasets. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required; experience with Power BI/Tableau (or similar) is desirable.
* Experience in a project support role in a complex organisation using Agile and waterfall methodologies.
* Administrative and organisational skills; experience supporting regular meetings, agendas and minutes for Portfolio governance cycles.
* Financial data management and project planning skills desirable.
* Ability to gain credibility and cooperation across the business through collaborative behaviours.
* Experience in tackling and automating routine issues with a continuous improvement and problem-solving mindset.
* Ability to work with uncertainty and find innovative solutions.

Please note, this role does NOT qualify for sponsorship. Applications from those wanting full, shared or part-time working arrangements are welcome. There is opportunity for blended home and office working; the team is dispersed across the country and based at an Environment Agency office (subject to Facilities approval). Some travel and overnight stay may be required.
