Are you a passionate Consultant in Neuropathology looking for a ground-breaking opportunity? We are thrilled to invite applications for a substantive consultant position in Neuropathology at our renowned Cellular Pathology department within the Specialist Clinical Services (SCS) Care Group at the Queens Medical Centre campus (QMC), Nottingham.

You will be joining our wonderful team who are the proud recipients of the RCPATH Team Achievement Award 2024 and the IBMS Team of the Year 2025, a testament to our dedication and expertise. Further to this the Neuropathology Team at NUH won the Innovation award for the development of Nanopore Technology within NUH. This role also plays a crucial part in providing expert diagnostic neuropathological services to over 4.5 million patients in the East Midlands.

You will be working alongside esteemed colleagues at the University of Nottingham and beyond, contributing to pioneering advancements in the field. This is a substantive role that is full time (10PA), but we are open to other candidates on part time basis too. This role also benefits from a fantastic incentive package with 20% of you total first year salary as a bonus! Receive 50% upon commencement and the remaining 50% after 12 months of employment.

Main duties of the job

You are expected to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching (including supervision, training, assessment and appraisal of specialist registrars and biomedical scientists), clinical audit, research and development. You will work within the multidisciplinary team of Neuropathology and may also be required to undertake management duties. Participation in the coronial autopsy service is welcome but optional.

The appointee, in collaboration with the other Consultants will be expected to fulfil the duties detailed in Job description which can be found in our job pack, attached in the supporting documents.

Working for our organisation

The working environment is supportive and friendly; there are excellent relations with both clinical colleagues and academics at the University of Nottingham. The Nottingham Neuro-Oncology Service has been granted Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence status for both adults and children – one of only two centres in the UK to hold both designations. The Neuropathology Service supports a number of clinical trials, including the BRAIN MATRIX and SIOP II Ependymoma trials. The successful applicant would be welcome to support these and other academic activities.


The department and subspecialist teams support new Consultants to help them adjust into their roles and gain experience and explore their interests.
Cellular Pathology at NUH is actively using digital pathology for primary diagnostics and the appointee will be supported to transition to Whole Slide Image reporting. This will allow for a flexible work from home options for reporting.

The neuropathology service is fully digitised including brain smears where required. The department is a teaching and training facility and the appointee will be expected to deliver undergraduate teaching (tutorials) and to contribute to the local ST teaching programme, as well as developing our own BMS staff. There is currently one ST3 in neuropathology (currently undertaking a PhD) and we are looking to add additional training posts.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide a comprehensive Histopathology diagnostic service, including full clinical liaison, to:

* Clinicians at NUH.
* Other users of the histopathology service in the Greater Nottingham health community.
* Other hospitals that may refer for specialist services with NUH.

To take a lead role in the development of specialist diagnostic techniques to meet the increasing demands of clinical users.

To be involved in the training of Specialty Trainees, scientific and BMS staff. Provision of reciprocal cover for periods of leave

To contribute, as required, to the teaching of pathology to undergraduates and postgraduates within the Medical School of University of Nottingham. To take part in Medical Audit and Quality Control.

To pursue a programme of Continuous Professional and Medical Education/ Development (CME/CPD) with the Royal College of Pathologists and to participate in annual Individual Performance Reviews (IPR) and Consultant appraisals.

To contribute to the requirements of Clinical Governance. To share in the administrative duties associated with the running of a clinical laboratory.


Person specification


Educational and occupational attainments

* Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview
* The CCT should be in Diagnostic Neuropathology
* Evidence of continuing professional development (existing consultants must be able to demonstrate active participation in a recognised CPD scheme).
* Peer-reviewed publications

* Able to contribute to the development of coherent ideas for service development and delivery.
* Able to communicate effectively with other health professionals.
* Proven managerial skills, especially team leadership

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.
