Job Summary
An exciting new opportunity has arisen at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust for a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join our supportive and innovative SLT team at Good Hope Hospital, leading on the provision of specialist speech and language therapy input to patients with swallowing and communication difficulties, primarily within our acute respiratory medicine service.
It is an opportunity to work within a supportive and highly experienced service that is the regional centre for excellence in the delivery of respiratory services in the West Midlands. The post involves taking a lead role in the advanced assessment and treatment of patients on acute respiratory units, including ITU step‑down, who have highly complex needs, determining diagnosis and identifying appropriate SLT treatment as clinically indicated.
You will be welcomed into a large and supportive therapy team with excellent training and development opportunities as well as a robust supervision and appraisal system. You will have the opportunity to work alongside other highly specialist staff and have access to regular videofluoroscopy and FEES clinics to further enhance and develop your existing specialist skills.
The post includes participation in the weekend on‑call service for inpatients across Heartlands and Good Hope Hospitals.
Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
You should be able to work as a highly specialist, autonomous practitioner with a clear passion in assessing and managing dysphagia and communication difficulties within an acute respiratory setting. Alongside this you will provide direct line management to the team and assist in delivery of specialist level training in suitable clinical areas. Evidence of strong organisational, communication and leadership skills are essential to complement your advanced speech and language therapy knowledge and skills. You should be passionate about providing effective patient‑centred care, as well as being highly enthusiastic about service development of respiratory services.
Qualifications
* Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent
* Health Professions Council – Licence to Practice
* Registered Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
* Evidence of relevant postgraduate training in a specialist area
* Desirable: Leadership training
* Desirable: Postgraduate advanced accredited dysphagia training
Experience
* Relevant postgraduate experience in key specialist areas relevant to the post
* Experience of management of adults with complex swallowing/communication needs
* Experience of involvement in VF/FEES clinic
* Experience of supervising SLT students at clinical tutor and supervisor levels
* Experience of leading audit
* Experience of training staff groups at all levels
* Evidence of working effectively in partnership with others within multidisciplinary teams and across agencies
* Desirable: Experience of staff management
* Desirable: Experience of conducting or being involved in research in the specialist area

Band: 7
Salary: £49,387 – £56,515 yearly
