Prevention Practitioner (Temporary)

Technical 3B Publish date: Wednesday 5th November 2025 Closing date: Tuesday 18th November 2025 at Salary: Term time 39 weeks, 5 days a week Hours: 37 hours per week Overview

West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) is the second largest fire and rescue service in England, serving an area of 902km square and a population of more than 2.9 million people.

Our vision is 'Making the West Midlands safer, stronger and healthier'.

This vision and the strategic goals outlined in 'Our Strategy' are what drives the people, professionalism and pride with which we serve our communities.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Prevention team as a Prevention Practitioner. Working under the direction of the Prevention Community Outreach Team Leader, the postholder will help plan, coordinate and deliver prevention education in line with the Prevention Strategy, Policy and Community Risk Management Plan.

Collaborating with colleagues, partners and stakeholders, the role focuses on reaching those most at risk and vulnerable to fires and other emergencies through engaging educational activities across WMFS sites and external educational settings. The practitioner will be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of these programmes, ensuring effective, inclusive and impactful learning experiences for all participants.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

* deliver targeted prevention education programmes to those most at risk, supporting WMFS community safety priorities
* plan, coordinate and deliver engaging sessions across WMFS sites and external educational settings
* work collaboratively with colleagues and partners to ensure effective, inclusive and high-quality programme delivery.
Essential skills or experience

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

* relevant qualifications or experience, with strong knowledge of prevention work and the ability to engage effectively with diverse groups and communities
* excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with experience presenting to varied audiences and building positive relationships with stakeholders
* self-motivation and organisation, with the ability to work independently, maintain confidentiality and demonstrate ongoing professional development
* a full UK driving licence.
Desirable skills or experience

It would be advantageous to have:

* strong interpersonal skills with an understanding and empathetic approach to others
* willingness to work flexibly
* the ability to work independently and manage tasks with minimal supervision.
Benefits

We offer a friendly working environment and benefits including:

* free, on-site gym facilities
* free, on-site parking.

We also offer access to an in-house occupational health (OH) facility, including OH health and fitness advisors, sports therapists, physiotherapists, cognitive behavioural therapy practitioners and counsellors.

In addition, employees have access to:

* 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme
* wellbeing programmes
* 'blue light' discounts across many retailers, through partner schemes
* Sports and Welfare scheme (for a small fee), with access to discounted products and services.
Diversity

We welcome applications from all eligible candidates. However, as women and Black and minority ethnic employees are currently under-represented in our service, we particularly encourage applications from these groups.

WMFS is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults. We expect the same of every staff member.

Successful candidates will be subject to necessary pre-employment checks, including - where applicable - relevant level Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, qualifications, medical clearance, identity and right to work. All applicants will be required to provide two suitable references.

How to apply

To apply, please complete the application questions outlining your skills and experiences in line with the job description (linked below).
