Salary: £81,000-£117,800

Allen Lane is proud to be supporting the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in their search for a permanent Deputy Director, Project Delivery. This is an SCS1 grade position, where you will lead the project delivery of a high-priority digital programme.


Working closely with colleagues across the organisation from the Safety and Surveillance, Innovation and Compliance, and Healthcare, Quality & Access groups, you will use your expert regulatory knowledge and understanding of the healthcare system to ensure that what we deliver truly meets the needs of the organisation. Strong leadership, sound judgement, and the ability to build consensus across diverse stakeholder groups will be essential to your success.


The MHRA enhance and improve the health of millions of people every day through the effective regulation of medicines and medical devices, underpinned by science and research. The agency is made up of c.1600 staff working across two main centres and peripatetically across the UK and abroad.


This role leads on the project delivery of a digitally enabled change programme designed to update and modernise all our regulatory processes, to ensure they are fit for purpose and efficient. The programme will use the best in class/emerging technologies to enable our highly skilled workforce to make prompt and risk proportionate decisions about the safety and efficacy of medicines and medical devices.


The programme of work is part of our wider ambition to make the MHRA the regulator of choice internationally, bringing innovative medicines and medical devices (including AI) to UK patients first and supporting the growth and development of the UK Life Sciences industry.


In order to demonstrate your ability to fulfil this role, applicants should be able to demonstrate experience with the following essential criteria within their application:

* Understanding of project delivery governance including service assessments, spend controls, and accessibility, security and data protection requirements.
* In-depth knowledge of the regulatory environment in which the Agency works with particular experience in complex data usage.
* Literate in Digital, Data & Technology (DDaT) practices and capable of effectively engaging with technical staff, suppliers and stakeholders to define the best approach to service design and delivery of the roadmap(s).
* One or more of the following qualifications/accreditation: MSP Practitioner qualification; PRINCE2 Practitioner; Agile Project Management Practitioner; APM Chartered Project Professional; Major Projects Leadership Academy; Project Leadership Programme; Leading and Managing Project Workstreams; ILA associated qualifications are desirable.

This role is be based at MHRA’s location in Canary Wharf, London. MHRA support flexible working, however for this role 60% time in the office is required.


Existing civil servants on level transfer will retain their existing base salary. Candidates applying on promotion will have their substantive base salary increased by 10% or start on the minimum of the SCS1 scale of £81,000 per annum, whichever is greater. External candidates (i.e. new entrants to the Civil Service) will be appointed on the salary band minimum.
