Senior Cardiac Cathlab Radiographer

Main duties of the job

Support the delivery of the Cardiac Catheter Lab Service. To assist in the provision of an efficient radiology service and be responsible for service delivery and service improvement. To undertake regular audit of own and other Radiographers’ practice. To facilitate and coordinate the patient pathway within the lab, taking local and national objectives into account, and to provide advice on developments. To deputise for the Superintendent Radiographer. To support 24/7 PPCI service, including bank/public holidays as required.


Job responsibilities

* Maintain a high level of clinical expertise.
* Participate in the department shift system and 24/7 PPCI service.
* Encourage right‑first‑time radiography and strive for quality assurance in all aspects of the radiology service.
* Ensure patient care, comfort, privacy, dignity, religious and cultural respect within the Radiology Department.
* Perform technical administrative tasks, maintaining accurate patient information, examination details and post‑processing requirements on Radiology Information and PACS systems; repair images on PACS when required.
* Administer intravenous contrast media in compliance with the Imaging Service protocol, following training and role requirements.
* Supervise, advise and mentor staff.
* Work closely with Superintendent Radiographers to provide optimum patient care and seek continuous improvement.
* Organise, plan and prioritise workload according to clinical need; organise departmental sections as required.
* Assist with training of new staff and continuous development of departmental staff to enable adequate cover and meet service demands.
* Assist in developing, documenting and monitoring protocols for practice within the area.
* Contribute to regular performance monitoring, review and quality management of all service aspects.
* Assist in monitoring service quality to patients and, where appropriate, develop proposals for service improvement.
* Monitor capacity and demand; review working practices to accommodate shifts in requirements. Escalate appropriately and communicate actions.
* Promote research and audit, supporting good practice and documentation; undertake project work.
* Ensure staff awareness of the Trust’s complaints procedure and handle complaints in accordance with this procedure.


Equipment Management

* Maintain knowledge of equipment and use it safely and efficiently according to protocols.
* Keep the clinical environment, equipment and accessories clean and tidy; clean between patients and participate in daily and weekly cleaning schedules; maintain documentation.
* Monitor equipment performance, report faults and hazards, act upon them, and ensure appropriate documentation is completed and filed.
* Implement and maintain a quality assurance programme for all equipment, ensuring QA follows servicing, repair and installation; take corrective action and file records appropriately.
* Contribute to equipment specification and selection processes as required.


Management of Staff, Leadership and Development

* Deputise for the Superintendent Radiographer, managing radiography staff and ensuring appropriate delegation and supervision of tasks.
* Demonstrate leadership and motivate staff.
* Manage rotas to ensure adequate cover for service requirements in and out of hours, maximising cost‑effective and efficient use of staffing resources.
* Assist Superintendents in identifying and meeting staff training and development needs.
* Provide training, support, guidance and supervision to Radiographers.
* Identify staff performance or behaviour below acceptable standards and take initial informal counselling where appropriate.
* Assist Superintendents in investigating incidents, concerns or complaints, updating records and providing feedback.
* Deputise for the Superintendent in sickness‑absence management as required.
* Undertake any other reasonable duties at the discretion of the Operations Manager & Principal Cardiac Physiologist or their deputies.


Communication

* Communicate complex information effectively to patients, relatives and staff.
* Use effective communication skills to reassure and gain cooperation of patients and relatives, particularly when they may be worried, distressed or confused.
* Ensure patients are adequately informed, consent is obtained, and they can ask questions or raise concerns.
* Assist the Operations Manager & Principal Cardiac Physiologist and Superintendent Radiographers in ensuring effective communication systems are in place and utilised.
* Keep all staff informed of departmental plans, service objectives and relevant Trust issues; encourage staff to contribute ideas, suggestions or concerns.
* Maintain close working relationships with staff within the Radiology Department/Imaging Service and other hospital staff groups.
* Communicate vulnerable adult and child protection concerns through appropriate channels.
* Attend staff/team meetings as required; chair meetings, take minutes and lead or participate in task and finish groups when necessary.


Responsibilities for Department Administration and Operation

* Ensure all clinical and non‑clinical information records are fully and accurately completed and maintained.
* Ensure all data input onto the Radiology computer system by staff is accurate and updated as necessary; facilitate image transfers to other Trusts upon request.
* Assist the Superintendent Radiographer in meeting financial and contractual targets and cost‑improvement plans (CIP).
* Oversee consumable stock ordering, receipt and recording within departmental procedures and agreed financial limits.
* Maintain cleanliness and infection prevention to meet the Trust’s Infection Prevention Policies; comply with audit requirements.
* Maintain clean and tidy work areas and waiting rooms, participating in regular cleaning rotas; contact with bodily fluids and occasional unpleasant smells may occur.
* Seek ways to improve the working environment and patient/visitor experience within the Radiology Department.
* Take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves, other staff, patients and visitors, referencing the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
* Encourage staff to acknowledge all Local Rules, Ionising Radiation Regulations, Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations and Health & Safety procedures; promote prompt reporting of accidents, equipment faults and untoward incidents and new policies.
* Ensure the highest standards of radiation protection for staff, patients and visitors and a safe working environment regarding other health and safety issues.
* Contribute to the development, monitoring and review of Risk Management programmes in the area and report all risks/incidents as appropriate.


Personal Development

* Show evidence of continuing professional development and attend training courses as necessary, in line with Trust targets.
* Keep up to date with current imaging technical developments, professional and Trust issues.
* Maintain competencies in extended roles (e.g., cannulation/IV, fluoroscopy procedures) and provide evidence of doing so.
* Participate in the Trust’s Appraisal programme and provide KSF evidence; prepare for and attend appraisal/performance management interviews and complete associated documentation.
* Contribute to the appraisal of junior staff in line with the Trust’s Appraisal Process.


Qualifications

* BSc Diagnostic Radiographer (or equivalent)
* HCPC registered
* PPCI experience
* Immediate Life Support
* Higher Professional qualification/Masters level


Experience

* Ability to carry out radiographic procedures to a high standard
* Considerable Band 5 Radiographer experience with sound clinical knowledge of radiography and/or fluoroscopy and/or cross‑section
* Sound knowledge of ionising radiation legislation
* Experience of stock control
* Specific expertise in relevant cardiac cathlab modalities
