The Role

WSP’s Land team is seeking talented Land professionals to join what is already the largest and most successful team in our industry. This is an exciting opportunity to develop or begin a career with a team that enjoys a successful reputation for the delivery of major strategic infrastructure projects across the UK and Ireland through support provided by land referencing, urban and rural landowner engagement, consultation management, land access, formal consents, statutory orders, compensation agreements and land acquisition.

We are the largest and most successful Land business supporting infrastructure development in the UK and Ireland, with 300+ specialist professional colleagues consisting of land consultants, property specialists, project managers and utility and topographical surveyors. We have the widest portfolio of projects available in our industry, offering unrivaled opportunities to both develop and diversify careers, working on some of the most exciting and challenging projects across the UK and Ireland.

Alongside our land referencing capabilities, our team of surveyors secures powers and/or negotiates land acquisition and land access to support infrastructure development. We provide clients with Property Cost Estimates, agree Heads of Terms and compensations, manage disposals, payments and client accounts, and offer a full range of property‑related services to assist our clients in the planning, securing and exercise of powers to construction, operation and maintenance of their infrastructure assets.


Land Consultant

* Your work will support our teams in the delivery of land referencing, land access, landowner & stakeholder engagement, optioneering and statutory processes.
* Identification of landowners, occupiers and other parties that hold an interest in land, through interpretation and research of the appropriate land registry information.
* Liaising with landowners, land agents, legal representatives, planning authorities, stakeholders, contractors and clients.
* Working with multi‑disciplinary teams to secure access to land for surveys, whether by agreement or through statutory mechanisms.
* Contribute to WSP Land delivery and success of high‑profile infrastructure projects locally and across the UK and Ireland.
* Provide training and mentoring to junior colleagues and undertake technical assurance of other colleagues’ work and contribute to our CPD‑accredited Land Academy.
* Have commercial awareness with an understanding of budget, scope, change control and other project management activities, including identification of project and data security risks.
* Client‑facing activities representing the business at Land Consultant level on projects.
* UK and Ireland travel plus possibility of travel to WSP’s Global Capability Centre (GCC) in India.


What we will be looking for you to demonstrate

* A keen interest in delivering land services for clients (including land referencing, survey access, stakeholder and landowner engagement or statutory processes). You may have relevant transferable skills and be passionate about the land and consenting industry.
* Experience working as part of a multi‑disciplinary team to deliver high‑quality outputs for clients.
* Effective communication and organisational skills with the ability to liaise at all levels with internal and external stakeholders.
* Ability to delegate and undertake technical assurance of other colleagues’ work.
* Drive and enthusiasm to create strong technical work.
* Ability to travel effectively to various sites/locations.
* General IT skills, Microsoft Office suite including Teams, and basic skills with GIS/mapping tools.
* Specific skills in land identification, ownership, and interests in land, strong understanding of land ownership and land management practices, project management skills, stakeholder engagement, experience with UK statutory consents requirements, and experience of wayleave agreements would be beneficial.

With a network of experts available to guide, we support your management and ownership of your own projects, client advisory, line management, presentation, training and leadership skills.


Variety of work

With a broad selection of projects, we don’t pigeonhole you into a particular project or role. The Land Academy enables you to broaden your capability into GIS, Data Management, Valuations, Negotiations, Referencing and Access and Project Management to become a more rounded and valuable consultant. Project experience rotates, on average, around every 18 months. Day‑to‑day activities vary from site activities, landowner engagement, access negotiations, client meetings, project management, report writing, data management, digital innovation scoping and map production.

The role is based in our Leeds or Newcastle offices, with the flexibility of hybrid working between one of these locations and from home. The candidate would ideally be located within North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, East Riding of Yorkshire, County Durham, Teesside, Tyne and Wear or North Lincolnshire.
