Role: Senior Azure Cloud Engineer

Grade and Salary: Grade 8 - £47,389 - £58,225 per annum

FTE and Working Pattern: 1FTE, 35hrs per week, Monday – Friday, Fixed Term (12 months maternity cover)

Holiday Entitlement: 33 days, plus 9 buildings closed days (and Christmas Eve when it falls on a weekday) for all full time staff.

About our Directorate

The Global Information Services (GIS) directorate provides a range of services to support, promote and supply information, information skills and infrastructure to support a modern research-intensive university in a global setting. This straddles academic library provision alongside a range of technical services and systems such as IT and AV services, systems and support for learning & teaching, research & enterprise, operational effectiveness. It is an integrated global service, providing services to students, staff, applicants, alumni, external users across all five campuses.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience of supporting and developing cloud services and infrastructure in a Microsoft Azure cloud environment. They will play a key technical role in a number of exciting projects including the Digital Student Experience Programme moving the Student Records system into Azure, Data & Insights, the procurement of a new virtual server infrastructure and the further development of our Certificate infrastructure which is becoming increasingly important as we roll out a new network utilising the HP Aruba and ClearPass technologies. Migration and re-architecture of on premises infrastructure to an Azure cloud environment will also be a requirement of the role.

Purpose of the Role

Lead the delivery of cloud services within the Cloud & Datacenter team, playing a key role in shaping and implementing the University’s GIS Cloud Strategy in support of wider institutional objectives. You will design and deliver scalable cloud architecture solutions, working closely with stakeholders to understand requirements and develop solutions that meet business and project needs. The role also contributes to the design, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of core datacentre infrastructure, including virtualisation platforms, servers, and backup systems.

Working collaboratively with the Cyber Security and Compliance team, you will ensure cloud and datacentre environments remain secure, compliant, and resilient. You will also liaise with external service providers and support vendors to manage incidents and resolve issues efficiently, helping to minimise disruption to critical University services.

Summary of Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Design, implement and maintain cloud environments utilizing primarily Azure but including other Cloud Providers.
2. Monitor systems and make sure they are running as expected; troubleshooting and resolving any issues that arise.
3. Document procedures and share important information with team members regarding setting up, configuring systems and overcoming issues that arise.
4. Liaise with user groups and set up new servers and upgrades as required either in the on premise or cloud environments.
5. Carry out operating system upgrades working alongside user groups.
6. Respond and carry out support requests for staff and students coming in via helpdesk ticketing system.

Education, Qualifications & Experience

Essential

7. Educated to first degree level, relevant professional certification or equivalent practical experience in the workplace
8. Minimum of 3 years experience designing, implementing and managing Cloud Environments, ideally in a Microsoft Azure environment.
9. A minimum of 3 years experience working with server and virtualization technologies.
10. Experience of working with firewalls and networking technologies, especially in a Microsoft Azure environment
11. Ability to write documentation and user guides in a clear, concise format that is understandable by both technical staff and end users
12. Excellent level of IT literacy and comfortable working with professionals in other specialisms
13. Good track record of developing and maintaining positive working relationships with internal and external customers, peers, stakeholders and others
14. Proven ability to solve technical or logistical problems
15. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
