Job Description:
Central Government is the biggest employer in Britain. Operational Research (OR) specialists advise the Government on how to make the best use of public funds. Using skills in problem structuring, modelling, and analysis, they help formulate policies and implement them effectively. OR involves working with policymakers and managers to generate optimal options for future actions. OR analysts employ various analytical techniques, including statistical analysis, simulation, and mathematical modelling, to explore problems and provide objective advice.
Main responsibilities include:
1. Assessing and improving the quality of public services in education, health, benefits, and other sectors.
2. Estimating funding requirements for future projects, such as job creation in industry.
3. Comparing the relative value of different options to inform decision-making.
Experience and Qualifications:
Applicants must have or expect to obtain in the next year a highly mathematical degree, which could be a minimum 2:1, or a 2:2 with relevant work experience, or a postgraduate qualification. To qualify as highly numerate, at least half of the degree coursework should be from subjects such as mathematics, physics, astrophysics, operational research, management science, engineering (civil, chemical, electronic), data science, decision science, statistics, econometrics, or similar fields.
