Job Title: Mechanical Engineer – M&E Building Services
Location: Hertfordshire (Secure Site)
Start Date: ASAP
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, Full-Time (43 hours per week)
About the Role:
We are currently seeking a qualified Mechanical Engineer to join a leading M&E Building Services Contractor on a long-term, high security prison project based in Hertfordshire.
This is a key technical role suited to an experienced engineer with a strong background in mechanical building services. The position requires attention to detail, the ability to coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, and experience working in secure or regulated environments.
Please note: Due to the nature of this project, all candidates must be eligible to pass Security Clearance (SC).
Key Responsibilities:
Deliver and oversee mechanical engineering works across HVAC, plumbing, BMS, and public health systems.
Ensure design intent is met during installation through regular inspections and technical reviews.
Coordinate with project managers, main contractors, subcontractors, and client-side engineers to align with programme timelines and specifications.
Support the commissioning process and handover documentation, ensuring compliance with project and legal requirements.
Review and manage key documentation including technical drawings, specifications, submittals, RAMS, commissioning plans, and O&M manuals.
Ensure health & safety standards are met, including conducting toolbox talks and reviewing risk assessments.
Attend site meetings and provide technical input and progress updates.
Identify and troubleshoot technical issues, escalating where required.
Qualifications & Experience Required:
Degree or HND/HNC in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related field.
Minimum 5 years’ experience in mechanical engineering roles within the building services sector.
Experience on secure/public sector projects (e.g., prisons, healthcare, defence) is highly desirable.
Strong knowledge of HVAC, BMS, and plumbing systems from design through to commissioning.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
CSCS Card (skilled level or higher).
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic project management tools.
Excellent communication, coordination, and reporting skills.
