Plant, Protection and Control Engineer
The Plant, Protection and Control Engineer plays a vital role within the design team. They are responsible for the design delivery of substation plant, equipment, and protection systems across various electrical infrastructures, including new connection projects in both the distribution and transmission sectors.
Their responsibilities include detailed design and procurement of substation equipment such as switchgear, transformers, protection systems, relays, busbars, SCADA telemetry, and associated activities throughout the project lifecycle.
The primary goal is to ensure the correct identification and procurement of infrastructure in a timely manner, achieved through detailed specifications, equipment schedules, and scheme drawings. They liaise with suppliers and manufacturers to support procurement in line with client specifications and approved designs.
Responsibilities
* Assess client project requirements and produce detailed specifications for plant, equipment, and protection systems.
* Create system designs ensuring compliance with specifications and tenders, coordinating with manufacturers and suppliers.
* Assist with tendering activities and provide technical guidance on schemes.
* Prepare site layouts and schematics for multi-stage substation projects.
* Manage external manufacturers and design consultants, overseeing outputs to ensure compatibility with electrical requirements.
* Coordinate with internal and external teams, clients, and manufacturers to produce accurate designs within deadlines.
* Produce detailed electrical control and protection schematics for large infrastructure projects.
* Create electro-technical drawings, procurement lists, and wiring diagrams for control and protection systems.
* Develop functional specifications and liaise with manufacturers for procurement.
* Produce specifications for high voltage plant and equipment associated with substations.
* Review manufacturer proposals and ensure equipment suitability.
* Develop equipment schedules complying with IEC, DNO, ENA, IDNO, and client standards.
* Review and develop single line diagrams, P&C block diagrams, and connection diagrams.
* Produce AC/DC schematic drawings, cable schedules, SCADA, and termination schedules.
* Maintain technical and commercial dialogue with suppliers and clients.
* Ensure proper documentation management and change control.
Qualifications and Requirements
* Proficient understanding of electricity industry standards, policies, and their application.
* Strong knowledge of electrical plant, transformers, protection, relays, and construction disciplines, adhering to ENA, BS, and IEC standards.
* Experience with substation construction, cabling, overhead lines, switchgear, protection, control, and major electrical plant design.
* Good knowledge of power systems, renewable energy, and protection design across voltages.
* Ability to develop detailed designs from scope of works based on standards.
* Capability to prepare single-line diagrams for multi-stage substations.
* Degree level education or equivalent is required.
