Job Description:

Job Purpose

To make a leading contribution to the growing research in the Geospatial Data Science Group, working with Professor Ana Basiri and the team to analyze geospatial data using various methods and models. The role involves working on new research projects, including "Missing Data as Useful Data," which explores integrating new forms of data with traditional data to improve real-world understanding. Applications include managing under-reported crime, social care, inclusive city planning, and dynamic census using administrative and alternative data. The successful candidate will contribute to world-leading research, develop their career, supervise students, and participate in conferences and workshops.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

* Investigate the use of high-quality survey data and large sample-sized "new forms of data" to address bias and under-representation issues in AI from a geographic perspective.
* Develop statistical frameworks to integrate "new forms of data" with traditional data.
* Collaborate with the Geospatial Data Science team and project partners such as Ordnance Survey GB, Google, Microsoft Research, Uber, Meta, and the Alan Turing Institute.
* Lead research activities, contribute to publications, and support the research impact.
* Present work at international and national conferences, seminars, and workshops.
* Support FAIR data principles and promote reproducibility.
* Participate in team meetings, seminars, and workshops.
* Supervise and mentor undergraduate and postgraduate students.
* Contribute to outreach activities and possibly teaching responsibilities.
* Ensure safety management in laboratory and experimental settings.
* Engage in personal and professional development and identify funding opportunities.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience


Essential:

* PhD or equivalent in relevant discipline; experience in statistics, mathematics, computer science, or related fields.
* Extensive knowledge of quantitative data analysis, statistics, imputation, inference, and simulation.
* Experience in programming languages such as Python or R.


Desirable:

* Knowledge of machine learning, geospatial, or spatio-temporal data.

Skills


Essential:

* Research creativity and collaboration skills.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Self-motivation, initiative, and problem-solving abilities.


For Grade 8:

* Leadership skills.

Experience


Essential:

* Postdoctoral experience or equivalent.
* Scientific writing and ability to produce quality outputs.


Desirable:

* Experience with international collaborations, funding applications, and mentoring.

Closing date: 1 October 2024
