Technical Advisor - Monitoring and Data Systems Team - 32406

The Monitoring Data & Systems Team (MDS) manages important Environmental Monitoring systems and datasets. The role supports and learns from colleagues while analysing and improving data that underpins our work.


Responsibilities

* Set up and manage users for environmental monitoring systems.
* Support users and resolve issues, especially during transition to the new My Environment application.
* Update, improve, and maintain datasets.
* Respond to internal and external data requests.
* Support system improvement and upgrade projects.


Qualifications

* Experience of working with large complex datasets.
* Willingness to develop and learn new technical skills and apply them across monitoring data and systems.
* Motivated, organised, friendly, helpful, and detail‑oriented.
* Proactive and enjoys solving problems.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to convey complex technical information to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
* Ability to build and maintain strong relationships, deliver through others, and provide excellent customer service.


Desirable Skills

* Experience of using and managing environmental monitoring data systems.
* Experience of PowerBI, Access, Excel, Python, SharePoint Online, and R.
* Working knowledge of water quality monitoring.


Competence 1: Data and Information Management

Description: Collects, analyses, interprets, records, manages, develops, and shares data, material, or information appropriately for a variety of purposes.

Question – The MDS team analyses, interprets, records, manages, develops and shares data appropriately for a variety of purposes. Please give an example where you have demonstrated this competency and how you overcame the challenges that were presented.


Competence 2: Takes Decisions and Solves Problems

Using the STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action and Result) can help when formulating your answers.

Description: Finds and delivers optimal solutions by effectively analysing all the information, probing to develop alternatives and taking sound and timely decisions.

Question – Please give an example of a time when you have solved a problem requiring perseverance and an eye for detail.


Competence 3: Focuses on Customers and Partners

Using the STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action and Result) can help when formulating your answers.

Description: Consults and collaborates with Customers and Partners effectively through awareness raising, education and combined projects, ensuring buy‑in to initiatives and the beneficial promotion of the Environment Agency’s duties and policies.

Question – Please give an example of a time when you have used data to address the needs of a customer.


Contact & Additional Information

Work location is flexible, but you must have a base at one of our offices across England and have a presence there. We offer hybrid home/office working but some travel is expected for meetings.

Interviews will be conducted via MS Teams towards the end of December/beginning of January. Interview dates will be confirmed for invited candidates.

An apprenticeship is available for the successful candidate.
