Job Title: Assistant Dean of Maths and English Department: Foundation Studies Salary: £56,507 per year Job Type: Permanent, 35 hours per week. Please note we have four positions available The Assistant Dean of Foundation Studies will support and deputise for the Dean of Foundation Studies at a specific City of Liverpool College site to ensure the successful running of FME, providing local leadership of quality cycles, performance management, attendance monitoring, performance data and supporting the development and effective development, adaptation and implementation of the school’s curriculum offer. The Assistant Dean of Foundation Studies will work with the other Assistant Deans, Curriculum Team, Heads of Schools/Deputy Heads of Schools, Inclusion Managers, Progress Leaders, and Senior Progress Leaders to ensure high levels student satisfaction, achievement, and sustainable progression. As this role also includes teaching responsibilities, you will lead by example in achieving excellence in teaching and learning through your own innovative and excellent professional practice and provide transformative and innovative ideas for all teaching, learning and assessment under your remit. Responsible to: Dean of Foundation Studies Key Responsibilities Leadership and Management: Work with Dean of Foundation Studies and curriculum team to develop and implement a curriculum offer that leads to sustainable destinations for all students. Work with the Dean of Foundation Studies, other Assistants and curriculum team to provide adaptive schemes of work with a curriculum focus. Support the Dean of Foundation Studies in the design of programmes, teaching approaches and assessments that will enable the curriculum area to achieve the highest standards and value-added. Undertake line management and appraisal of staff within the school in order to ensure the effective course management and administration of a portfolio of programmes with the curriculum area. Support the continuous improvement of teaching, learning and assessment within the school, providing developmental observations and learning walks for teaching staff and appropriate coaching and mentoring support. Work with Heads of School, Dean of Foundation Studies and other Assistant Deans to promote a positive culture in FME and be instrumental in supporting new staff with relevant training and coaching as needed. Support the Dean of Foundation Studies to ensure that students’ programmes are individually tailored to ensure progression to further learning or employment, including the development of students’ enterprise and employability skills. Support the Dean of Foundation Studies to ensure collaborative working with College business support and student services teams to deliver successfully managed exams and controlled assessments. Support the Dean of Foundation Studies in the development of the school’s self-assessment and quality improvement plans. Work closely with Heads of School and curriculum staff to support college targets in attendance and achievement to ensure all students are offered a high-quality learning experience and remove all barriers to learning. Be aware of national developments in further education, innovative curriculum and technology to drive progress and achievement and contributing to a culture of continuous improvement and upskilling. Teaching, Learning and Assessment: Plan, prepare and deliver high quality lessons in order to achieve effective management of the learning process Use a range of effective and appropriate teaching and learning techniques to engage and motivate students and encourage independence and student autonomy. Establish a purposeful and motivating learning environment where students feel safe, secure, confident and valued and where appropriate behaviour, communication and respect for others is promoted and maintained, while challenging discriminatory behaviour and attitudes. Set and mark work and track all students’ progress and attendance in accordance with agreed College systems and policies and monitor progress, attendance and data for your site. Work with colleagues to address additional student English, Maths and Digital skills development in a collaborative, meaningful way. Communicate and consult with parents, carers and students including Parent’s Evening, Welcome Evenings, events and open evenings. Provide class cover and undertake additional duties, including participation in Open Evenings and other College events across campuses, as required. Generic duties: To contribute fully to the mission and values statement of the College Group ensuring its effective implementation in all aspects of College life. To contribute to the College and curriculum area strategic objectives and to actively engage in the annual review. To take proactive responsibility for Health & Safety to ensure that a safe working environment and safe working practices are maintained at all times. To comply with the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). To support cross-college actives as required in particular the key enrolment and invigilation periods. To Review own professional development needs and to participate fully in future training and development. Active participation in internal and external quality cycles, undertaking key training for exam boards and supporting with the internal verification systems for all qualifications. To deputise for the Dean of Foundation Studies in any necessary capacity. Skills, Knowledge and Expertise Essential Criteria Educated to degree levels and/or significant professional experience A recognised Teaching qualification with English or Maths subject specialism Experience of leading and managing English or Maths teams Experience of coaching and mentoring others Successful GCSE and/ or Functional Skills teaching experience Excellent computer literacy – ability to use the current IT programmes of the College Experience of leading GCSE and Functional Skills internal quality assurance Proven relevant experience of curriculum design, development & delivery Detailed knowledge and understanding of the curriculum area Engaged and passionate about Continuing Professional Development Minimum of Level 2 literacy and numeracy or willingness to complete High level of communication and interpersonal skills, effective member of a team Ability to set high standards for students, colleagues and for themselves An ICT qualification Membership of a relevant professional body Experience of assessing students’ needs and planning curriculum for their benefit Good understanding of curriculum development to meet the training needs of employers and other stakeholders. An ability to work with your site team to improve attendance and engagement using college monitoring systems.
