Senior Environmental Lawyer / Barrister (National)
Location: National (flexible across offices)
Contract: Permanent | Full-time (flexible working available)
The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Senior Environmental Lawyer / Barrister to join a leading national environmental and regulatory practice. This is an exciting opportunity for a specialist adviser to work on complex, high-profile environmental matters across contentious and non-contentious workstreams.
You will play a key role advising clients on environmental regulation, crisis response, compliance strategy, and transactional support, with the opportunity to shape and grow a nationally recognised environmental offering.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
* Advise clients on environmental regulation in the context of crisis events and incident response
* Support major transactions through environmental due diligence and risk assessment
* Provide strategic guidance on complex compliance matters across regulated sectors
* Act on waste regulation issues, including end-of-waste and classification disputes
* Advise on environmental permitting for waste and industrial operations, including enforcement defence
* Support clients in relation to pollution incidents, contaminated land, and water resources matters
* Provide expertise on climate change law and emerging regulatory developments
* Advise on environmental information and disclosure obligations
* Assist clients with the design and implementation of Environmental Management Systems
* Deliver training and support on crisis and risk management in collaboration with wider regulatory teams
About You
We are looking for someone with:
* Significant post-qualification experience in environmental and regulatory law
* Strong expertise across both contentious enforcement matters and advisory/compliance work
* Proven ability to manage complex, technical environmental issues with commercial awareness
* Experience advising on waste, permitting, pollution, contaminated land, and climate-related regulation
* Confidence working directly with clients and acting as a trusted senior adviser
* Excellent drafting, advocacy, and communication skills
* A collaborative mindset and interest in contributing to practice growth nationally
