Job Description
The Plater Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the daily activities of plating operations. This includes leading a team of platers to ensure the accurate and efficient fabrication of steel structures in accordance with engineering drawings and project specifications. The Supervisor ensures that quality, safety, and productivity targets are consistently met and maintained.
Key Responsibilities:
* Supervise and coordinate the work of Platers to ensure tasks are completed safely, accurately, and on time.
* Interpret technical drawings and ensure team members understand the scope of work and tolerances required.
* Monitor quality of fit-up and alignment to meet welding and construction standards.
* Assist in planning workloads, setting priorities, and deploying labour resources efficiently.
* Provide hands-on support and guidance in plating techniques including marking, setting, tacking, and burning.
* Ensure effective use of tools and machinery including overhead cranes, jacks, press and rolling machines.
* Coordinate with welding and inspection teams to ensure seamless handovers and quality assurance.
* Maintain a clean, organised, and compliant working area in line with HSE standards.
* Coach and mentor team members, identifying skills gaps and supporting development and training.
* Complete job documentation and reports, including progress updates and safety checks.
Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience:
* Extensive experience in a heavy fabrication/plating environment, with a strong background in structural steelwork.
* Proven ability to lead and coordinate a team in a fast-paced fabrication yard.
* Proficient in interpreting fabrication and engineering drawings.
* Skilled in marking out, measuring, setting and aligning structural steel components.
* Competent in tack welding and the use of burning equipment.
* Ability to level structures using Dumpy levels, Seica levels, or equivalent.
* Working knowledge of rolling and press machinery operations.
Desirable Skills:
* Heat lining and hand plasma cutting proficiency.
* Familiarity with modern fabrication equipment and digital measurement tools.
* Good IT literacy for documentation and production tracking.
HSE Requirements:
* Valid certification for MEWP and scissor lift operation.
* Forklift truck licence.
* Trained in working at heights and safe lifting techniques.
* Strong commitment to safety procedures and risk management.
